Thermo Pond Heater $14.99 "The World’s only energy efficient pond heater! Thermo-Pond is a unique patented pond heater that keeps a hole through the ice in backyard ponds for just pennies a day. In fact, Thermo-Pond can save up to $30.00 a month in electricity! Just think, Thermo-Pond pays for itself in as little as 2 months. That’s important, especially with today’s soaring energy prices and in some cases, shortages. Thermo-Pond floats on top of the water and is thermostatically controlled to never get hot. Unlike some other heaters, Thermo-Pond will never burn a pond liner or plastic pond. It naturally allows the pond to ice over while maintaining a hole through the ice. The hole in the top of the Thermo-Pond helps allow toxic gasses to escape all winter long. Allowing that gas exchange can help keep a healthier environment during the winter months Thermo-Pond should be used in ponds that are deep enough to allow plenty of livable water under the iced portion of the pond. Thermo-Pond has been tested in the Northwoods of Wisconsin at temperatures dipping down past 30? below Zero Fahrenheit. UL and CUL listed." |

Hot Club of 52nd Street $16.98 It is hard to imagine two more appropriate guitarists to bring together for a tribute to the great Django Reinhardt than Bucky Pizzarelli and Howard Alden. They're joined by two other veterans, violinist Johnny Frigo and bassist Michael Moore, for this exciting set recorded at the A. C. Pianocraft Recital Hall in New York City, though it has the intimate sound of a recording made in a small nightclub. Although this is obviously a salute to the partnership of Reinhardt with violinist Stephane Grappelli, the approach is fresh due to interaction between the musicians and their frequently humorous solos. Frigo inserts a bit of pizzicato violin as the two guitar masters set the pace with Moore for a rapid fire take of "Tangerine." Reinhardt's "Nuages" has long been a favorite of guitarists, so Alden and Pizzarelli open this standard by themselves before they switch to the chugging rhythm made famous by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. The interplay between Alden and Pizzarelli is incredible in the old chestnut "Avalon." The quartet finishes with a blazing interpretation of "I Got Rhythm." The only caveat about this terrific live session is the audience's insistence on regular enthusiastic applause as one solo gives way to the next, which results in drowning out the music itself. While the musicians likely appreciated the crowd's approval, it's a shame that they couldn't hold themselves in check until the conclusion of each performance. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music GuidePerformers: Howard Alden - Guitar (Acoustic); Johnny Frigo - Violin; Michael Moore - Bass, Double Bass; Bucky Pizzarelli - Guitar (Acoustic) |

Hot Groups $3.48 Many corporations, in their attempt to create innovative products and services, have focused on the concept of building teams. While many groups fizzle, on rare occasions the members of a group will experience an extraordinary eruption of excitement, transcending an organization's rigid confines to achieve astonishing results. These individuals, say Jean Lipman-Blumen and Harold J. Leavitt, are lucky enough to be members of a "hot group," a phenomenon they lucidly and enthusiastically describe in their ground-breaking new book Hot Groups. A hot group is not a name for a newfangled team, task force, or committee. Rather, a hot group is defined by a distinctive state of mind coupled with a style of behavior that is intense and sharply focused on its ultimate goal. Stretching themselves beyond their own expectations, members of a hot group plunge into enterprises that have the potential to change, even ennoble, their own and others' lives. Neither trendy fabrication nor new management fad, hot groups have existed since the dawn of civilization, perhaps invigorating groups of cavemen to hunt together furiously for food before winter's approach. Today, examples of hot groups abound in territories such as Silicon Valley, where impassioned people have blazed paths through the burgeoning computer industry. Consider the hot group that created the original Macintosh and revolutionized the personal computer market. John Sculley, who joined Apple in the early 1980s, described a "magnetic field" that surrounded the Macintosh hot group members, and Bill Gates, Microsoft's mastermind, reported that a hot programming group to which he once belonged "didn't obey a 24-hour clock." Instead, they programmed for days at a time, pausing only to eat and talk about software with fellow programmers. Here also are examples of hot groups at work in other industries: the individuals that created the blockbuster TV drama "Hill Street Blues"; the Navy and civilian personnel that transformed a standard cruiser into a guided missile cruiser in less than 12 months; and even the ad hoc crisis management group advising President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile crisis. Indeed, the inspiring case studies found throughout Hot Groups illustrate that well-nourished hot groups can profoundly transform any type of organization. Still, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt recognize the risks inherent in loosening an organization's structural soil enough to accommodate these groups. Consequently, they address such issues as how to provide the kind of leadership required by a hot group, how to mesh a hot group with the regimented structure of the overall corporation, how managers can encourage new hot groups, and how best to cope with an overheated hot group. Drawing on decades of research and experience with groups and organizations throughout the world, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt have written an intensely engaging book abou... |

Hot City $4.98 It's one of those days in the city when the sidewalk is hot as a frying pan, and Mimi and her little brother Joe are sweatin' out rivers. Spyin' on Mama and the blah blah ladies is no fun. Out on the street the buses are huffin' out dragon-hot smoke. Even a princess-pink snow cone melts away too fast to lick. Then Mimi and Joe find their way to a place where it's always cool, a place where you can be a princess on a throne or a dinosaur in a forest, a place where you can let your imagination run free . . . the library. Gregory Christie's red-hot illustrations team up with Barbara Joosse's smooth urban voice in this book that points the way to the coolest place in any city. |

Hot Rod $28.98 Aesthetics are at the core of hot rodding. And nothing captures the visual essence of the hot rod like Peter Vincent's photography. In brilliant color and fully-saturated black-and-white photography, Vincent will capture America's most essential hot rods, hot rodders, and racers in dramatic settings such as the Bonneville Salt Flats and California's dry lakes - the places from which hot rodders have always drawn inspiration. The majority of the book's photographs will get the same treatment: each will have its own page, surrounded by white space and properly cropped and framed to show off Vincent's photographic artistry. Woven throughout the book, Vincent will tell the story of hot rodding through interviews with the originators of the culture, land speed racers, and the new generation of hot rodders who are keeping alive the aesthetic sensibility of hot rodding.About the AuthorFrom the salt flats of Bonneville to the endless variety of dry lakes and drag strips that dot the American landscape, photographer Peter Vincent magnificently reveals the pure artistry of the cars themselves. Inspired by early associations with Ansel Adams and others, Peter's amazing images have appeared in popular enthusiast publications since the 1980s, including Rodder's Journal, Street Rodder magazine, Hop Up, and in his best-selling book Hot Rod, An American Original in 2001. 52nd Street $12.98 Back in the thirties and forties, when New York City was the capital of the jazz world—you could hail a cab, ask the driver to take you to "The Street," and find yourself on 52nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Musicians, jazz lovers, college students, big businessmen—everybody knew that this was "The Street that Never Slept," the Street where every night was New Year's Eve, the Street that Variety editor Abel Green so aptly dubbed "America's Montmartre." Here, for the price of a drink or two, you could walk through the whole history of jazz. Hot jazz was born and raised on The Street, as were the big swing bands of the thirties and the modern "cool" jazz combos of the forties. Comics like Alan King and Joey Adams got their start on the Street, as did musicians like Erroll Garner, Jack Teagarden, and Coleman Hawkins. Bessie Smith performed on the Street, and so did Count Basie, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Sarah Vaughn, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw, and other jazz greats.Arnold Shaw was there—as musician, composer, PR man, and just plain listener—and he recreates for us the three swinging decades that were the history if the Street: its birth in Prohibition-era speakeasies, where musicians jammed for gin or just for the fun of it; its post-Repeal blossoming as the center of the jazz universe, lined up and down on both sides with tiny, smoke-filled rooms where black and white musicians played to capacity crowds; its postwar decline as the Street became a tawdy tenderloin of strip and clip joints. |

Hot Potato $12.98 In a nation distinguished by a great black athletic heritage, there is perhaps no sport that has felt the impact of African American culture more than basketball. Most people assume that the rise of black basketball was a fortuitous accident of the inner-city playgrounds. In Hot Potato, Bob Kuska shows that it was in fact a consciously organized movement with very specific goals. When Edwin Henderson introduced the game to Washington, D.C., in 1907, he envisioned basketball not as an end in itself but as a public-health and civil-rights tool. Henderson believed that, by organizing black athletics, including basketball, it would be possible to send more outstanding black student athletes to excel at northern white colleges and debunk negative stereotypes of the race. He reasoned that in sports, unlike politics and business, the black race would get a fair chance to succeed. Henderson chose basketball as his marquee sport, and he soon found that the game was a big hit on Washington's segregated U Street. Almost simultaneously, black basketball was catching on quickly in New York, and the book establishes that these two cities served as the birthplace of the black game. Hot Potato chronicles the many successes and failures of the early years of black amateur basketball. It also recounts the emergence of black college basketball in America, documenting the origins of the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association, or CIAA, which would become the Big Ten of black collegiate sports. The book also details for the first time the rise of black professional basketball in America, with a particular emphasis on the New York Renaissance, a team considered by experts to be as important in the development of black basketball as the Harlem Globetrotters. Kuska recounts the Renaissance's first victory over the white world champion Original Celtics in 1925, and he evaluates the significance of this win in advancing equality in American sports. By the late 1920s, the Renaissance became one of the sport's top draws in white and black America alike, setting the stage for the team's undisputed world championship in 1939. As Edwin Henderson had hoped -- and as any fan of the modern-day game can tell you -- the triumphs certainly did not end there. |

Hot Seat $10.48 In his nearly fourteen years as chief drama critic of The New York Times, Frank Rich was both admired as a passionate advocate for the best in New York theater and reviled as "the Butcher of Broadway" for his presumed destructive power over the commercial fate of Broadway shows. Hot Seat is Rich's definitive chronicle of his long run--an encyclopedic anthology of more than three hundred of his best reviews and essays, interspersed with further thoughts, entirely new to this volume, about his adventures on the aisle at the tumultuous time when Broadway was decimated by AIDS and colonized by the British musical. Rich's opening-night accounts of an era's biggest hits (from The Phantom of the Opera to Six Degrees of Separation) and most notorious bombs (from Moose Murders to Carrie) are here, as are his year-by-year reflections on major careers both established (Stephen Sondheim, Peter Brook, Jessica Tandy) and new (August Wilson, Kevin Kline, Caryl Churchill). Here as well are Rich's final words on his sparring matches with Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Hare, among others, and his retrospective lists of which plays and performances he admired most and least--as well as lists of the productions he feels he over--and underrated the first time around. From the tragic opening night of David Merrick's 42nd Street to the unprecedented triumph of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Hot Seat captures what was in every way a dramatic chapter in cultural history, as told and lived by a journalist with the best seat and sharpest eye in the house. |

Hot Venom $16.98 The release of Hot Venom finds the Rebirth Brass Band adding a definite rap element to the traditional brass band music indigenous to New Orleans. Rebirth is successful in combining the community-based traditional brass bands (which have always been a street art, featuring music that is used for parades, burials, celebrating) and injects the current urban sensibilities of rap and hip-hop, creating a potent brand of hot venom. While brass band purists may find this new direction appalling, it is the next logical step for the younger musicians to keep the form from dying, or, worse, becoming a museum piece. A word of caution: this may be the first brass band album to contain a parental advisory sticker. The abrasive lyrics on Hot Venom may turn off some listeners; however, if you can get past that (it's worth it!), it doesn't take away from the overall party groove the Rebirth band delivers. ~ Al Campbell, All Music GuidePerformers: Keith "Bass Drum Shorty" Frazier - Drums (Bass); Philip Frazier - Tuba; Ajay Mallery - Drums (Snare); Stafford Agee - Trombone; Glen Andrews - Trumpet; Revert Andrews - Trombone; Tyrus Chapman - Trombone; James Durant - Sax (Tenor); Derrick Shezbie - Trumpet |

Street Trends $3.98 Remember when body piercing was radical? Now it's another fad practiced by suburban kids. Retro sixties and seventies? Done that; the self-indulgent eighties is the decade of the moment. But what about the trends of tomorrow? How do you find out what's in store for the youth generation before it hits the mainstream? Listen to the people who make it their business to track the trends: Janine Lopiano-Misdom and Joanne De Luca of Sputnik, an innovative market research firm that examines today's alternative youth cultures for clues to tomorrow's mainstream trends and markets. Street Trends offers an engrossing, provocative look at the hidden centers of urban street cultures, identifies important new trends emerging from the streets and predicts how they will impact the culture at large. Take veganism. It's a good bet that this hot fringe trend will negatively affect the booming meat industry. And MTV? Its glory days are numbered as more and more suburban kids, following in the footsteps of their more hard-core urban counterparts, tune in to the more thoughtful Discovery Channel. The accuracy of Sputnik's predictions has earned them a client base that includes high-profile companies such as Reebok International, PepsiCo., Levis-Strauss, Burlington Industries, Shiseido International, and the National Football League Properties.
