Four Generations of Miles: A Live Tribute to Miles $16.98 Four Generations of Miles is an unusual tribute to Miles Davis, featuring a quartet made up of alumni from four different editions of the trumpeter's bands, while omitting keyboards and trumpet entirely. Drummer Jimmy Cobb, tenor saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter, and guitarist Mike Stern concentrate almost exclusively on the 1950s repertoire of Davis, excepting Ron Carter's somewhat abstract, R&B-flavored "81," which is from the mid-'60s. Stern's sparse accompaniment for Coleman in "All Blues" works surprising well in place of a piano, while the percolating take of "On Green Dolphin Street" will get a listener's feet patting. Coleman's soulful playing is the centerpiece of a lush treatment of "Blue in Green." Carter and Cobb provide a superb foundation for the soloists throughout this live recording. The creativity and musicianship throughout this excellent tribute make it stand head and shoulders above most such efforts. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music GuidePerformers: Ron Carter - Bass (Acoustic); Jimmy Cobb - Drums; Mike Stern - Guitar (Electric) |

Miles $13.98 For more than forty years Miles Davis has been in the front rank of American music. Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles is one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. The subject of several biographies, now Miles speaks out himself about his extraordinary life.Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he has encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life. But above all, Miles talks about music and musicians, including the legends he has played with over the years: Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Trane, Mingus, and many others. The man who has given us some of the most exciting music of the past few decades has now given us a compelling and fascinating autobiography, featuring a concise discography and thirty-two pages of photographs. |

Compact Jazz: Miles Davis $11.98 While the majority of Miles Davis' work can be found on Blue Note, Prestige, and Columbia, there are still several loose ends to account for from both his own dates and sessions he did as a sideman. This edition of the budget Compact Jazz series rounds up a few of them with some classic Charlie Parker sides from 1951, several cuts taken from Davis' soundtrack to Louis Malle's 1957 film, Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, and a 1958 all-star date arranged and conducted by Michel Legrand. Starting off with four excellent samples from the Legrand date that also featured Coltrane and Bill Evans, the bulk of the disc is taken up by ten tracks from Davis' noirishly cool Malle soundtrack. The remainder is comprised of four of the trumpeter's best cuts with Parker, including "Au Privave," "K.C. Blues," and "Star Eyes." Maybe a bit of mishmash, Davis' Compact Jazz turn still offers listeners a quality sampler of some of the jazz innovator's more obscure work. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music GuidePerformers: Cees Schrama - Sequencing; Eddie Costa - Vibraphone; Betty Glamann - Harp; Walter Bishop, Jr. - Piano; Paul Chambers - Bass; Kenny Clarke - Drums; John Coltrane - Sax (Tenor); Miles Davis - Trumpet; Kenny Dennis - Drums; Bill Evans - Piano; Barry Galbraith - Guitar; Teddy Kotick - Bass; Herbie Mann - Flute; Pierre Michelot - Bass; Charlie Parker - Sax (Alto); |

A Hundred Miles an Hour 1978-1989 $19.98 Roy Loney was the lead singer with the Flamin' Groovies until he walked out on the band in 1971, and he took a good share of their rock action with him -- when the Groovies re-emerged in 1976 under the leadership of founding guitarist Cyril Jordan, their frenetic rockabilly and blues-infused approach was gone in favor of a British Invasion-styled pop sound that was often beautiful but no match for the original in terms of sheer power. Anyone who wondered what had happened to the band's frantic energy only had to turn to Roy Loney's first solo album, 1979's Out After Dark, which sounded like a slightly updated version of the sound the Flamin' Groovies were reaching for on their masterful 1971 album, Teenage Head. Loney cut a handful of solo albums ranging from good to great after returning to action in the late '70s (and is still cutting great stuff in the new millennium), but most of those discs are unfortunately out of print, so the record collectors at Australia's Raven Records have cherry-picked the highlights from six different Loney releases for the compilation A Hundred Miles an Hour 1978-1989. On top of being a great rock & roll belter with no fear of pushing himself into the red zone, Loney is a fine songwriter with a wildly idiosyncratic sense of humor, and not many roots rockers would have come up with anything like the big city rant "Scum City," the libidinous "Neat Petite," or the tongue-in-cheek hipster anthem "Panic to a Manic Degree." Most of these cuts feature a few other former Groovies backing Loney (including drummer Danny Mihm, bassist George Alexander, and guitarist Tim Lynch -- Cyril Jordan even pops up on two cuts), and while these sessions were cut for small labels that couldn't always give Loney the studio time and production smarts his songs deserved, when Loney and his sidemen kick into fourth gear the occasionally thin production can be easily forgiven as Loney's full-bodied voice fills the playing field. The Flamin' Groovies' catalog has been extensively reissued in recent years, but most of Loney's solo work remains unfortunately hard to find, and A Hundred Miles an Hour is an excellent stopgap until his work starts getting the treatment it deserves; those who wonder what became of Loney after he quit the Flamin' Groovies should do themselves a favor and pick up this profile of a natural born rock & roll genius in action. ~ Mark Deming, All Music GuidePerformers: James Campbell - Vocals (Background); Rick Estrin - Harmonica; Kenny Johnson - Vocals (Background); John Kaldor - Guitar (Rhythm); |

Albert Hammond/99 Miles from L.A. $18.05 BGO's two-fer of Albert Hammond and 99 Miles from LA rounds up the two albums that Albert Hammond recorded after the success of 1973's "It Never Rains in Southern California." Where that single and the album of the same name were big hits, the 1974 Albert Hammond and 1975's 99 Miles from LA were modest hits, along the lines of his 1973 follow-up to "Southern California," "The Free Electric Band": the albums themselves didn't chart on Billboard, but the 1974 LP brought a Top 40 single in the propulsive, Cat Stevens-like "I'm a Train," the title track from 99 Miles from L.A did well on the adult contemporary charts while barely squeaking onto the Hot 100. Success of course is not necessarily a measure of artistic quality, and both of these records are strong, ambitious affairs even when they're quite pop. Albert Hammond displays a heavy Paul Simon influence in how Hammond incorporates Caribbean rhythms and writes stark folk-rock: "Dime Queen of Nevada" is a dead-ringer for "Mother and Child Reunion," while "I Don't Wanna Die in an Air Disaster" recalls "Duncan" so strongly it's fortunate that Hammond didn't sequence these two back-to-back, since that's the only way they'd echo Paul Simon even more.Of these two sides, the Caribbean flavor has a bigger presence here: "Everything I Want to Do" rides a chant-along steel drum chorus quite cheerfully, as does the light-as-air "The Girl They Call the Cool Breeze," while "We're Running Out" bounces along on a white reggae beat and these sunkissed songs are balanced by contemplative introspection ("New York City Here I Come") and dramatic symphonic pop with a nearly cinematic pull ("Half a Million Miles from Home"), along with songs that split the difference between these two extremes (the quite excellent soft rock sweep of "Names, Tags, Numbers and Labels" and "Candle Light, Sweet Candle Light"). At times, it seems like Hammond is in conflict with himself since the sunny world pop doesn't mesh with the introspection or the symphonic pop, but it does make for an interesting listen as it vacillates between nearly bubblegum pop and weighty, almost too-ambitious songs. 99 Miles from L.A. doesn't have the problem of shifting tones: Hammond abandons the flirtation with Caribbean rhythms as well as the darker introspection and makes a lush, easy rolling Californian soft rock album that screams 1975 in its warm, gentle pastel tones created with strings, harmonies, fuzz tones, saxophones and the mild disco rhythms that drive "Lay the Music Down." Which isn't to say that Hammond has abandoned serious subjects, as the title "A Job Is a Home to a Homeless Man" suggests, or even the friendly hippie good vibes of "Love Isn't Love Till You Give It Away" proves -- he's just united it under the warm umbrella of soft rock. This makes for a more consistent album sonically, and his writing is more consistent as well; it may not be as ambitious as "I Don't Wanna Die in an Air Disaster" but it's more successful, capturing his m |

Miles de Voces en Vivo $13.98 Regrettably, many regional Mexican artists will go their entire careers without recording a live album. They know that radio stations are mainly interested in studio recordings, and their labels fear that only the artist's most hardcore fans will purchase a live album. But thankfully, the lack of a live album isn't a problem for Conjunto Primavera; Miles de Voces en Vivo documents their appearance at a Mexican Independence Day concert in Chihuahua, Mexico, on September 16, 2004. Primavera's set isn't strictly a play-the-hits show. The norteño/grupero/Latin pop outfit does perform some of its major hits, including "Ave Cautiva," "Adiós, Adiós Amor," and "Hazme Olvidarla." But because Primavera's set was part of a Mexican Independence Day celebration, this CD is really about more than Conjunto Primavera -- it becomes a celebration of Mexican culture in general, and performances of Mexican standards like Gilberto Parra Paz's "Que Dios Te Perdone" and José Alfredo Jiménez's "Ella" are an excellent way for Primavera to enjoy September 16 (a day that celebrates Mexico's independence from Spanish rule just as July 4 celebrates U.S. independence from British rule). Some fans will be disappointed to learn that the ballad "Perdoname Mi Amor" -- a major hit for Primavera in 2002 -- isn't performed. As many hits as Primavera has had over the years, one doesn't expect Miles de Voces en Vivo to be all-inclusive -- but did "Perdoname Mi Amor" have to be omitted? Another complaint: the concert's date and location aren't listed in the credits; one has to dig around on the Internet to find that information. But all things considered, Miles de Voces en Vivo is a rewarding document of Primavera on-stage -- one that isn't recommended to casual listeners but will definitely please Primavera's sizable group of hardcore fans. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Malcolm Harper - Mezcla; Gabriel Zavala - Mezcla |

Golden Miles: Australian Progressive Rock $47.99 Reissue specialists Raven Records (Australia) -- co-founded by Oz Rock's human encyclopedia Glenn A. Baker -- have done a sterling job over the years of resurrecting great music from the past. This two-CD set (two and a half hours of playing time) is a proverbial cornucopia of intriguing, and largely forgotten, prog rock from some fine antipodean exponents of the genre. Actually, many of these artists found success in the mainstream Down Under, but Golden Miles showcases them in their more adventurous moments. The stylistic range across the album's 30 tracks is quite stunning, but certainly this is progressive rock -- just don't expect everything to sound like King Crimson. Ear-catching tracks include the jazz-slanted "Make Your Stash" by legendary Aussie rockers Daddy Cool (best known for their rock & roll anthem "Eagle Rock"), the Zappa-ish "Make It Begin" by Sons of the Vegetal Mother (also fronted by Daddy Cool singer Ross Wilson), and the quaking "'Til My Death" by avant-garde metallurgists Buffalo (from their landmark 1973 album, Volcanic Rock). But the curio of curios is "Seasons of Change" by Fraternity, a tuneful, psychedelic folk-rock number sung by none other than a pre-AC/DC Bon Scott. Excellent liner notes include a capsule bio (written by Ian McFarlane) on each band and an overview of the period (from Baker). Probably of most interest to collectors, aficionados, and those who personally remember this musical chapter of yore, many casual listeners will also find Golden Miles very entertaining fare. ~ Adrian Zupp, All Music Guide |

A Proper Introduction to Miles Davis: Enigma $9.98 Great Britain's Proper imprint has been releasing terrific multi-disc boxed collections by many major artists in the genres of jazz, blues, and country since the 1990s. On occasion, they've also issued double-disc retrospectives. These offerings have been long on detail in terms of not only volume, but great sound, accurate discographical information, and best of all, they retail at a very attractive price point. Which brings us to their single-disc series, "Proper Introduction To..." In this case, it's Miles Davis. The bottom line is that any single-disc collection attempting to offer a righteous introduction to the work of Miles is going to fall somewhat short. That makes sense since he was not only at the forefront of so many different periods in jazz, but he also either created them or was a founding father, at the very least. This 16-cut set showcases Miles mainly in his early days as a leader, recorded for Prestige, though there are a couple of sides he cut for Blue Note and one with his first real boss, Charlie Parker. Brilliant artists such as Sonny Rollins, Walter Bishop, Jr., Jackie McLean, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Max Roach, Tommy Potter, Art Blakey, Oscar Pettiford, and Kenny Clarke all accompany Davis here in various places. The music is either solid bebop or early hard bop, and all of it is pre-Coltrane or Gil Evans. That said, while this isn't any kind of a definitive collection, all of the sides here, if you don't already have them, make excellent cases for investigating this early period more deeply, since there is nary a track of music during the Prestige years that isn't worth hearing. This is all inspired, most of it quite fiery, and brilliantly executed not just by the soloists, but by the various ensembles as well. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Walter Bishop, Jr. - Piano; Art Blakey - Drums; Kenny Clarke - Drums; Gil Coggins - Piano; Miles Davis - Trumpet; Jimmy Heath - Sax (Tenor); Percy Heath - Bass; J. Miles de Voces en Vivo [CD & DVD] $16.98 Regrettably, many regional Mexican artists will go their entire careers without recording a live album. Miles to Miles: In the Spirit of Miles Davis $17.98 The award-winning producer/composer/keyboardist/synthesizer arranger Jason Miles pays tribute to one of his major influences, the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis. With Miles to Miles a 12-track disc featuring symbolic titles that recognize some of Davis' exquisite tastes, Jason Miles has created a masterful musical program that is resplendent with both the spirit and creative vibe of the legendary trumpeter. Jason Miles' masterful programming and synth arrangements expand the musical ideas into an otherworldly realm that was unheard of during Davis' modal period and reign with arranger/orchestrator Gil Evans in the late '50s and early '60s. The songs here are truly 21st century concepts. The set opens with "Ferrari," a reference to Davis' red motorcar and the high-speed drive that the two musicians took up the Pacific coast. The energetic rhythms capture this trip's velocity as saxophonist Michael Brecker adds an angular melody line over the electronic funk. DJ Logic's turntables add extra dimensions and colors. "Butter Pecan" is a take on the trumpeter's love of butter pecan ice cream. This track is great and features an overdubbed sax section played by Gerald Albright and a solo by Adam Holtzman. One of the brightest spots on this amazing recording is "Flamenco Sketches,"the Spanish-influenced song from Davis' classic 1959 album titled Kind of Blue. With updated lyrics and instrumental stylings written to the melodies of Davis' and John Coltrane's original solos, and guest appearances from pianist Keiko Matsui and guitarist Marc Antoine, this song comes alive with the beauty and spirit of Davis' genius. Miles to Miles was inspired by the first time Jason Miles ever met Miles Davis, who sketched a little stick figure on a note pad and autographed it "Miles to Miles" with a little trumpet. With the addition of some of contemporary jazz's most in-demand musicians, these 12 musical stories tell a tale of their creativity, inspiration, and friendship, and aptly demonstrate Jason Miles' capabilities as a true innovator. ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music GuidePerformers: Roger Blanc - Chart; Dean Brown - Chart, Guitar; Graham Haynes - Ambience, Cornet; Romero Lubambo - Chart, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Vocals; Jason Miles - Chart, Drums, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, Keyboards, Organ, Organ (Hammond), Sampling, Synthesizer Bass, Wurlitzer; DJ Log |

A Few Miles from Memphis [Bonus Tracks] $11.98 When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. The second set includes a similar setup but inserts trumpeter Blue Mitchell into the lineup and brings drummer Hugh Walker on board. There's a nice take on "Rakin' and Scrapin'" with some great solo work by Mitchell and Coleman, and a solid version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Mabern's piano work is excellent on both albums, whether building the rhythmic base that keeps these pieces in motion or offering energetic solos. Despite the small changes between sets, these two albums easily flow into one another and offer a nice, 75-minute portrait of Mabern in 1968. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., All Music GuidePerformers: Bill Lee - Double Bass; George Coleman - Sax (Tenor); Harold Mabern - Piano, Piano (Electric); Blue Mitchell - Trumpet; Walter Perkins - Drums; Buddy Terry - Sax (Tenor); Hugh Walker - Drums |

DAVIS,MILES: BALLAD ARTISTRY OF MILES $7.98 Compilation producers: Ken Kahn, Pete Welding.Miles Davis was one of jazz's great minimalists. Over the years, he refined his sound to the point where he could say more with a single note than with a series of phrases. Legend has it that when Coltrane inquired about a good way to end a solo, Miles replied "Take the horn out of your mouth, Trane." It's this sensibility that made Miles such a great ballad player.Though in later years, he ventured into ballad format with less frequency, these earlier recordings find him fully willing to test the downtempo waters. The unhurried lyricism of his legato lines on "How Deep is the Ocean" is downright stirring. The perfect, angular phrases Miles lays down over the easy swing of "Israel" are the definition of taste. While some of the tunes here are a touch too fast to be technically considered ballads, this offbeat collection of Miles' more muted work offers a valuable glimpse at an important facet of his talent. |
