The Original $8.98 The Original is a collection of early Jeff Foxworthy performances. While his humor is often as good as his better-known albums, the album isn't as consistent as his two major-label albums. ~ Sara Sytsma, All Music Guide |
|
|
All American [Original Cast] $7.98 All American premiered in 1962 as Charles Strouse and Lee Adams' follow-up to their highly successful Bye Bye Birdie, with the book written by Mel Brooks. While All American is comparable to Bye Bye Birdie in approach, it is less impressive and was not as well regarded by audiences (it closed after only 80 performances). The story follows a man who comes to America to teach engineering, but instead manages to teach the football team to win. There are high points to be found here, but not enough to fill an entire show. Ray Bolger, Eileen Herlie, Ron Husmann and Fritz Weaver appear on this original Broadway cast recording. ~ Sarah Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Against All Odds [Original Soundtrack] $7.98 While the soundtrack to the 1984 Out of the Past remake Against All Odds is now best remembered for Phil Collins' classic theme song for the movie, the album also features several other memorable songs, as well as excerpts from Larry Carlton's synthesizer-heavy score. "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now") remains not only one of Collins' definitive singles, but one of the 1980s' best love songs, a perfect mix of over-the-top drama and genuine emotion that has aged better than anyone might have expected in 1984. The rest of the album, meanwhile, sounds completely of its time, but that's a big part of its appeal; songs such as Stevie Nicks' brooding "Violet and Blue," Mike Rutherford's "Making a Big Mistake," and Big Country's surprisingly dour "Balcony" make the soundtrack a veritable time capsule of mid-'80s mainstream pop. "Walk Through the Fire" may not be one of Peter Gabriel's strongest or most memorable tracks, but it's still a decent example of his ability to mix the experimental with the accessible. Kid Creole & the Coconuts' "My Male Curiosity" sounds just as fey and wolfish, and as playful and stylish, as ever. Carlton's synth-and-guitar-driven score tends toward the melodramatic, particularly on tracks like "Search," "Solitario," and the unintentionally hilarious "Rock and Roll Jaguar," but they're all a part of the fun. While it's not an especially great soundtrack, Against All Odds is still an entertaining '80s artifact. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide |

That's All! $19.98 After a two-year hiatus from the Las Vegas casino circuit to appear on Broadway in Golden Boy, Sammy Davis, Jr.'s triumphant return was commissioned by none other than Reprise Records' boss -- one Francis Albert Sinatra. That's All is a living testament to the omni-talented entertainer. On the two-CD set, Rhino Records has retrofitted the original release with a pair of previously unissued performances -- "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody" and the theme song to My Mother the Car. Parties curious for the sensation of what it must have been like in a major Vegas showroom during the reign of the Rat Pack need look no further than That's All. It becomes clear why Davis became so endearing to not only Sinatra and Dean Martin, but also to anyone who simply loved to be entertained. His versatility is genuine -- as opposed to an actor who tries to sing or vice versa. This allowed for Davis' persona to present amazing hues of intensity without ever losing his irreverent sense of laid-back hip. Examples of the innate sense of timing and dramatic abilities that Davis brandishes are evident throughout. On the Mercer/Arlen standard "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home," as well as throughout the medleys featured on disc one, listeners hear the grace and panache that would set the standard for all the imitations that followed. The various spoken "Monologue" pieces, which comfortably date the performance, are another treat. The political incorrectness in Davis' dialogue is a reminder that, no matter how much things may change, they also remain the same -- such as the immense talent of Sammy Davis, Jr. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Aaron Bell - Bass; John Derose - Guitar; Reunald Jones - Trumpet; Benny Powell - Trombone; George Rhodes - Piano; Buddy Rich - Vocals; Michael Silva - Drums |

All the Pretty Horses [Original Soundtrack] $9.98 Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let's face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart -- and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton -- is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart's score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film's text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In "Edge of the World," cornets play at the music's outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, "Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two" features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton's Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a return appearance here with an actual song. The track "Porque" features the stirring vocals of Raul Malo of the Mavericks, who contributed the lyrics to the selection. It's a sad, romantic ballad. Lost love drips from the cowboy's hat, regret drapes itself in tears in his shaded eyes, and he stands out in the rain singing to no one. Also, homage is paid to Stuart's greatest influence and benefactor, the daddy of bluegrass music himself, Bill Monroe. His "My Last Days on Earth" is included here. (Everybody knows nobody was listening to bluegrass music in Texas or Mexico in the late '30s.) The only real complaint about this gorgeous score is its brevity. Clocking in at under 50 minutes, it's easy to hear where edits have been made out of longer tracks, though each piece flows into the next like water. It's a mirror image of the movie but doesn't suffer near as badly for it. Despite his already prodigious talents as a songwriter, singer, and musician who is almost single-handedly keeping the country music tradition alive in the modern idiom, Stuart has proven himself a capable and worthy composer of film music. Here's hoping there's more work of this kind in his future. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide |

Jim Thorpe, Original All-American $5.48 Jim Thorpe was one of the greatest athletes who ever lived. He played professional football, Major League Baseball, and won Olympic gold medals in track & field. But his life wasn't an easy one. Born on the Sac and Fox Reservation in 1887, he encountered much family tragedy, and was sent as a young boy to various Indian boarding schools—strict, cold institutions that didn't allow their students to hold on to their Native American languages and traditions. Jim ran away from school many times, until he found his calling at Pennsylvania's Carlisle Indian School. There, the now-legendary coach Pop Warner recognized Jim's athletic excellence and welcomed him onto the football and track teams. Focusing on Jim Thorpe's years at Carlisle, this book brings his early athletic career—and especially his college football days—to life, while also dispelling some myths about him and movingly depicting the Native American experience at the turn of the twentieth century. This is a book for history buffs as well as sports fans—an illuminating and lively read about a truly great American. |

From now on, The Original Tomcat can be purchased from Xlibris.com, Amazon.com or other Internet book services. Just ask for The Original Tomcat by Jackson Sellers, and decide whether you want it in dust-jacketed hardback or quality paperback. The world's most famous class of destroyers, the Fletchers, joined the American fleet during World War II. There were 175 of these little gray workhorses, all heavily armed against threats from sea, land and air. No admiral ever had enough of them. Most fought in the Pacific War against Japan, serving anonymously alongside well-known aircraft carriers and battleships. Dozens of Fletchers ran with the big boys in mighty Fast Carrier Task Force 38/58 under Admirals Halsey, Spruance, Mitscher and McCain. The USS Colahan (DD-658) steamed this perilous but triumphant journey to Tokyo Bay, surviving when others didn't. This is the fifth and final edition of The Original Tomcat: A Fletcher Destroyer Goes to War. The book, which follows the Colahan through the climactic 1944/1945 battles of the Japanese-American Pacific War, was author-published four times in limited editions between 1994 and 1997. It was well received by Colahan shipmates and Fletcher-class destroyer fans, and it continues to be in demand. Here is a sampling of reader reactions: "A wonderful work by a skilled writer. All ships should be so lucky as to have their exploits chronicled so well." Thomas J. Peltin, president of Tin Can Sailors, Inc. "A magnificent p |

Original Cuts $10.98 Bob Marley & the Wailers' late-'60s/early-'70s recordings have been repackaged a million times over, which makes Original Cuts -- yet another repackaging of those pre-Island recordings -- unnecessary upon first glance. Chances are, if you're a big fan you'll already have some if not most of these early recordings in your collection somewhere, whether spread out across a few stray compilations or rounded up in the three-disc, all-encompassing Grooving Kingston 12 collection. Which is precisely why the single-disc Original Cuts is so welcome, especially for casual consumers: it gathers together, plainly and simply, only the best-known of Marley & the Wailers' early work -- songs like "Stir It Up," "Concrete Jungle," "Lively Up Yourself," and "Kaya" that they would later re-record and popularize on their mid-'70s albums for Island/Tuff Gong. Granted, these aren't necessarily the "best of" those early years -- there's practically nothing here from the excellent Soul Rebels album, for instance -- but these are the most well-known songs. For this reason, Original Cuts is especially curious for anyone who is familiar with -- and only with -- the albums Marley & the Wailers cut for Island. These are the original cuts, to quote the album's title, and they're all great songs, albeit rough and primitive at this point in time (especially the ten dubby "versions" compiled here). This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the early work of the Wailers, you should know if you don't already; however, if you don't want to get caught up in a mire of Marley miscellanea, stick with this good-value single disc of familiar favorites. Every song here is a winner, and the disc is chock-full of them. Then, if you like what you hear and don't mind the rough and primitive sound of these early recordings, there's a wealth of other lesser-known, pre-Island recordings awaiting your studious discovery. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music GuidePerformers: Bob Marley - Vocals; Peter Tosh - Vocals; Bunny Wailer - Vocals |

Original Tao $29.48 Revolutionizing received opinion of Taoism's origins in light of historic new discoveries, Harold D. Roth has uncovered China's oldest mystical text -- the original expression of Taoist philosophy -- and presents it here with a complete translation and commentary.Over the past twenty-five years, documents recovered from the tombs of China's ancient elite have sparked a revolution in scholarship about early Chinese thought, in particular the origins of Taoist philosophy and religion. In Original Tao, Harold D. Roth exhumes the seminal text of Taoism -- Inward Training (Nei-yeh) -- not from a tomb but from the pages of the Kuan Tzu, a voluminous text on politics and economics in which this mystical tract had been "buried" for centuries. Inward Training is composed of short poetic verses devoted to the practice of breath meditation, and to the insights about the nature of human beings and the form of the cosmos derived from this practice. In its poetic form and tone, the work closely resembles the Tao-te Ching; moreover, it clearly evokes Taoism's affinities to other mystical traditions, notably aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism. Roth argues that Inward Training is the foundational text of early Taoism and traces the book to the mid-fourth century B.C. (the late Warring States period in China). These verses contain the oldest surviving expressions of a method for mystical "inner cultivation," which Roth identifies as the basis for all early Taoist texts, including the Chuang Tzu and the world-renowned Tao-te Ching. With these historic discoveries, he reveals the possibility of a much deeper continuity between early "philosophical" Taoism and the later Taoist religion than scholars had previously suspected. Original Tao contains an elegant and luminous complete translation of the original text. Roth's comprehensive analysis explains what Inward Training meant to the people who wrote it, how this work came to be "entombed" within the Kuan Tzu, and why the text was largely overlooked after the early Han period. |

The Original Cowboy $9.98 Against Me!'s The Original Cowboy consists of studio demos recorded as a trial run before the actual sessions for 2001's As the Eternal Cowboy, and it's one of those records that forces an important question -- why was this released? Apparently, frontman Tom Gabel regrets re-recording the songs at all, thinking now that they were perfect the first time and should have been released as-is, just like was done with "Cavalier Eternal." He may have had a point, because let's be honest -- between the Eternal Cowboy and the Original Cowboy, the songs basically sound the same. Yes, there are subtle hints here and there that you're listening to a different record. "T.S.R." sounds somewhat more immediate and raw as a demo; there's a bit more grit audible in Gabel's voice overall, and the unfinished quality carries on throughout the album where everything seems just a tad dustier and dirtier. A few songs have shorter lead-ins, and there's a brief yet triumphant intro instead of an intermission (though the two sound alike). But usually when demos surface, they're noticeably different than the finished songs -- stripped down melodies on acoustic guitar, choruses missing harmonies, some of the lyrics might even be different. Yet "Unsubstantiated Rumors" is the only song here with significant changes; the demo boasting a dirty, bass-heavy sound with thick guitars and powerful vocals, while the finished version relegates the bass to the background under acoustic strums, sparser delivery, and an occasional triangle ding. Head-to-head comparisons are needed to find the minute differences between the rest of the track listing, and even then, there's nothing major to find. The albums are essentially interchangeable, and especially considering that there's nothing new included (bonus tracks, live cuts, or even more recent demos), The Original Cowboy remains solely for completists who don't mind being reminded that what they really want is just some new Against Me! music already. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide |

Original Fire $4.98 In this important new collection, her first in fourteen years, award-winning author Louise Erdrich has selected poems from her two previous books of poetry, Jacklight and Baptism of Desire, and added new poems to compose Original Fire.Profound and accessible, this collection anticipates and enlarges upon many of the themes, and even the characters, of Erdrich's prose. A sequence of story poems called "The Potchikoo Stories" recounts the life and afterlife of the questing trickster Potchikoo, echoing the wit and humanity of the inimitable, Nanapush, who appears in several of Erdrich's novels, most recently The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse. Similarly, the group of poems called "The Butcher's Wife" contains the germ of Erdrich's most recent novel, The Master Butchers Singing Club.A powerful new poem, "The Seven Sleepers," forms the core of an entire section of the book and is about the passionate search for the divine in all its forms. The final section, "Original Fire," travels through birth, ordinary life, loss, and redemption. These poems reveal that poetry emerges from what we fear most, and that memory is endurance. |

Original Dubliners $34.98 The original Dubliners -- Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaran Bourke, and John Sheahan -- are represented on 51 songs cut between 1967 and 1972, starting (naturally) with "Seven Drunken Nights." The diversity of material encompasses drinking songs, ballads depicting romantic folly, sea shanties, covers of songs by Ewan MacColl and Pete Seeger (among others), and also political songs, with numerous variations and permutations. Among the great moments captured here is a live rendition of "Molly Maguires," which is simply transcendent in its intensity and passion, followed by "McAlpine's Fusiliers" (live from another venue), as restrained as the prior number is boisterous until the banjo break, when it takes on a larger-than-life quality. Besides the leadoff song, highlights such as "Whiskey in the Jar," "All for Me Grog," and "The Rising of the Moon" (those just from their albums Seven Drunken Nights and More of the Hard Stuff) are worth the price of admission, and there's a lot more here -- indeed, the contents of more than half a dozen LPs have been shuffled and jumbled up among the three discs, and the producers weren't afraid to draw upon live and studio renditions of the same songs, which only increases the fun. The remasterings all date from the mid-'90s and sound just fine -- even the backing voices are well-delineated, in textures that were only hinted at on the original LPs -- and unlike most of the EMI Gold, All Music Guide |

Original Outlaws $6.98 BMG Special Products' Original Outlaws is an unremarkable but nevertheless enjoyable collection of live performances from Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, the two key figures of '70s outlaw country music. Ironically, most of these performances are from 1982, just as the outlaws were on the wane, but both Willie and Waylon are in good form, turning in solid versions of "Good Hearted Woman," "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," "Just to Satisfy You," "Write Your Own Songs," "Last Cowboy Song," and "Heaven or Hell." It's hard to tell who this is for -- there aren't enough hits to make this interesting to casual fans, yet there isn't enough information or exceptional performances to make this worthwhile for collectors -- but it's not a bad budget-priced disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Original Youth $12.98 It isn't often that a memoirist gets the biographic treatment, but the story of Edmund White's youth was too dramatic to resist. In this bracing true-life tale, Keith Fleming, White's nephew whom he adopted, captures a particularly unusual childhood. Forced to be a confidante to his unhinged mother, terrified and attracted to his imperious father, the teenage White became a Buddhist, a cruiser of hustlers and married men, and an FBI drug informant on his way to ultimate fame as a leading gay literary figure. Drawing on personal knowledge, letters, photographs, and extensive interviews with those closest to "Eddie," Fleming neither exploits his subject nor sugar-coats him. Original Youth is a rich portrait of a complex subject and a "wild child" who managed to survive and flourish against all odds. |

The Original Hits $17.99 Although Baccara scored just two U.K. hits and none in America, the duo's mainland European fame was vast -- so much so that 11 tracks spread across a superlative "greatest-hits" disc can afford to omit one of the duo's best-ever singles, "Parlez-Vous Français?," in favor of others that English-speaking listeners might never have heard of. Of course, "Sorry, I'm a Lady" and the trans-European chart-topper "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" are here -- how could they not be? So are "Koochie-Koo," the Swedish Top Five smash "Darling," and the stirring "The Devil Sent You to Loredo" (the duo's final international hit), all vivacious vamps that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who fell in love with Baccara's biggest hits. And, though it is true that not every one of Baccara's biggies was instantly memorable (a flat rendition of "La Bamba" and "La Adelita" head that particular list), in the hands of regular songwriters Dostal/Soja, Baccara's Original Hits emerges everything that the duo itself was -- bright and bubbly, cute and kitsch, and oddly, even kind of sexy. ~ Amy Hanson, All Music Guide |

The Original Accident $20.98 The future once promised the certainty of a better life for all but now it is full of uncertainty, danger and fear. Our lives are surrounded by the threats, imaginary or real, posed by terrorist outrages, natural catastrophes and disasters of all kinds. The future is overshadowed by the nightmare of an outmoded humanity overwhelmed by a catastrophe of its own making, a kind of catastrophic grand finale that would mirror the original accident - the Big Bang - that some scientists believe created the universe. A biting meditation on Progress technoscientific progress, at any cost and without any limits this book defines the ways in which postindustrial science has merged with out-and-out hyperterrorism to threaten the foundations of Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian civilization, and the future of the planet with them, through innovation of mass catastrophes that are part and parcel of its panoply of inventions. Urging us to face up to the consequences of our brave-new-world technologies, Virilio calls for the creation of a Museum of the Accident to fight our habituation to horror and violence, and our daily overexposure to terror, in the name, not of some preventive war, but of a preventive intelligence that would help us deal with both natural and artificial disasters. |

American Original $59.98 Hailed by The New York Times as "America's Aristophanes," Will Rogers was one of this century's most astute and beloved humorists. If as he often remarked, he never met a man he didn't like, it is also true that Rogers never met a man he didn't like to make fun of. Everyone from congressmen and Presidents to Hollywood movie moguls and wealthy industrialists bore the brunt of his gently lacerating wit--and seemed, mostly, to be charmed in the process. So popular did Rogers become--through dozens of films, a daily column that ran for nine years in newspapers across the country, and countless lectures and stage performances--that he was often urged to run for Congress and even the Presidency. Upon receiving a mock appointment as Congressman-at-Large for the whole United States, Rogers protested, "I regret the disgrace that's been thrust upon me here tonight. I've tried to live my whole life so that I would never become a congressman." In American Original, Ray Robinson chronicles the trajectory of Will Rogers' remarkable life. Written with engaging immediacy and filled with a wealth of delightful anecdotes, this lively portrait follows Rogers from his childhood in the Indian Territory of what is now Oklahoma, to his first spellbinding lariat performances in the Wild West shows (where he would often lasso prominent audience members and drag them on stage), to his stardom in vaudeville and the Ziegfeld Follies, to his early silent movies and the later "talkies," and finally to his astonishing influence as a "cowboy philosopher" columnist read by over 40 million Americans. Far more than other biographers, Robinson excels at conveying Rogers' impact as a political commentator ("I belong to no organized political party. I am a Democrat.") and his great success as an actor in Hollywood, where he was the leading star of Fox Films. And along the way, Robinson paints a vibrant portrait of one of America's most colorful eras. We follow the early evolution of modern entertainment, enjoy vivid snapshots of W.C. Fields, Charlie Chaplin, Florenz Ziegfeld, Eddie Cantor, Samuel Goldwyn, Shirley Temple, and John Ford, and, perhaps most important, witness the major political events of the era through Will Rogers' uniquely perceptive eyes. American Original succeeds most appealingly in bringing Will Rogers before us with all the spontaneity, intimacy, and honesty of a live performance. In it we are given front row seats to the life of a character unabashedly American and unforgettably original. |

The Original Soundtrack $19.98 10cc's third album, The Original Soundtrack, finally scored them a major hit in the United States, and rightly so; "I'm Not in Love" walked a fine line between self-pity and self-parody with its weepy tale of a boy who isn't in love (really!), and the marvelously lush production and breathy vocals allowed the tune to work beautifully either as a sly joke or at face value. The album's opener, "Une Nuit a Paris," was nearly as marvelous; a sly and often hilarious extended parody of both cinematic stereotypes of life and love in France and overblown European pop. And side one's closer, "Blackmail," was a witty tale of sex and extortion gone wrong, with a superb guitar solo embroidering the ride-out. That's all on side one; side two, however, is a bit spottier, with two undistinguished tunes, "Brand New Day" and "Flying Junk," nearly dragging the proceedings to a halt before the band rallied the troops for a happy ending with the hilarious "The Film of Our Love." The Original Soundtrack's best moments rank with the finest work 10cc ever released; however, at the same time it also displayed what was to become their Achilles' heel -- the inability to make an entire album as strong and memorable as those moments. ~ Mark Deming, All Music GuidePerformers: Graham Gouldman - 6-String Bass, Autoharp, Bass, Double Bass, Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Percussion, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Kevin Godley - Bongos, Cello, Drums, Drums (Bass), Marimba, Moog Synthesizer, Percussion, Synthesizer, Timbales, Tympani [Timpani], Vocals, Vocals (Background); Lol Creme - Guitar, Keyboards, Organ, Percussion, Piano, Synthesizer, Vibraphone, Violin, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Eric Stewart - Guitar, Guitar (Steel), Keyboards, Organ, Piano, Piano (Electric), Vocals, Vocals (Background) |

Original Sinners $13.98 Supported by a stellar cast of musicians, including members of the Distillers and Sluts for Hire, L.A. punk chanteuse Exene Cervenka makes a welcome return as frontwoman for Original Sinners, displaying a fire and focus not seen since her days in X. The album opens with the scorching "Birds & Bees," driven by exhilarating surf beats and punk guitar breaks. Songs about white-trash love gone wrong abound, but always with a wry, ironic twist that is uniquely Cervenka's. The alcohol-drenched country-rock duet between Cervenka and Jason Edge, "Whiskey for Supper," recalls her off-key harmonizing with John Doe; her lyrics are characteristically and hilariously skewed ("I need a little bartenderness/Assault and flattery/Pleading internally...Spin the bottle, spin the bed/Crazy in love or crazy instead?"). "One Too Many Lies" starts as just another twangy been-done-wrong-by-a-cheatin'-man song and ends as a sort of gritty, redneck feminist anthem ("You said a woman should learn her place/That's the one lie that I'm talking about/Really you know I don't mind the rest/That's the one lie that made me/Tear up my wedding dress") that's propelled by blazing steel-guitar riffs and driving rhythms. Several instrumentals serve to showcase the greener musicians' chops (lest they be upstaged by Cervenka's distinct vocals?): Soto's "Alligator Teeth" and "Mourning After" and the Cervenka-penned album-closer, "Tick Tock." This is a great first effort from Original Sinners that'll have nostalgic X fans thrilling. ~ Kim Reick Kunoff, All Music GuidePerformers: Exene Cervenka - Guitar, Vocals; Kim Chi - Bass, Vocals; Jason Edge - Guitar, Vocals; Sam Soto - Guitar; Mat Young - Drums |

Original Band $13.58 What has always set Doyle Lawson's groups apart from other progressive bluegrass outfits is their equal focus on both vocal and instrumental virtuosity. Where colleagues like the Country Gentlemen, the Seldom Scene, and the New Grass Revival tended to emphasize unusual repertoire and instrumental pyrotechnics, Lawson's band, even with its kaleidoscopically shifting membership, has always maintained a consistent dual focus on fiery playing and tight, rich, gospel-flavored harmonies. The Original Band compiles the first two albums (Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Quicksilver Rides Again) that Lawson made with his own group after leaving the Country Gentlemen in 1979, and it will probably stand as the definitive document of his early work as a bandleader. There are blistering versions of Bill Monroe's "On and On" and the traditional "Shady Grove," the forward-looking "A Touch of Pennsylvania," and several absolutely stunning gospel numbers, including the standard "He Put a Rainbow in the Clouds for Me" and "Calm the Storm." If you had to limit your bluegrass collection to only 20 discs, this would have to be one of them. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Mike Auldridge - Dobro; Terry Baucom - Banjo, Vocals; Sam Bush - Fiddle; Jerry Douglas - Dobro; Bobby Hicks - Fiddle; Doyle Lawson - Mandolin, Vocals; Jimmy Haley - Guitar, Vocals; Lou Reid - Bass, Vocals |

Original Cinema $16.98 A slightly sharper edge surfaces in Spyro Gyra's second effort for the Telarc-affiliated Heads Up label. While their performance still tilts more toward easy listening than searing fusion, there's a bit more punch than usual in the upbeat tracks. Frontman Jay Beckenstein cultivates a slightly grittier sound by concentrating largely on tenor sax, while a trio of guest percussionists adds dimension to the beat on several numbers, especially the festive "Cape Town Love." The tour de force performance is probably "Flashback," largely because Beckenstein goes it alone, blowing some eloquent, Wayne Shorter-style lines against his own more than serviceable pre-recorded piano accompaniment. The filmic theme, reflected in the titles of several tracks, is more affectation than substance; in truth, Original Cinema extends rather than detours from the path laid down for a quarter century by this smooth jazz juggernaut. ~ Robert L. Original Hits $11.98 Original Hits sums up disco sensation Sylvester's years (1977-1981) with the Fantasy label. These years include most of the artist's most important output, particularly dancefloor hits like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," "Dance (Disco Heat)," and "Body Strong." In addition to these stellar dance tracks, songs like "Cry Me a River" and a live version of "You are My Friend" emphasize Sylvester's warmth and soulfulness. The album is shorter and less comprehensive than Fantasy's earlier Greatest Hits compilation, but all the same offers a good and, since it's one CD rather than two, likely more affordable introduction to one of the most exciting and energetic figures of the disco era. ~ Ben Tausig, All Music GuidePerformers: Louis Biancaniello - Prophet Synthesizer, Synthesizer; Patrick Cowley - Special Effects, Synthesizer; James ? - Vocals (Background); Louis Barbarin - Horn; Danny Chan - Horn; Alfredo de la Fe - Strings; John Echert - Horn; Michael Finden - Clavinet, Keyboards, Organ, Piano (Electric); John Gatchell - Horn; Carl Hall - Vocals (Background); Delores Hall - Vocals (Background); Sharon Hymes - Vocals (Background); Rick Kvistad - Timbales, Tympani [Timpani]; Maurice Long - Vocals (Background); Ella Mitchell - Vocals (Background); Izora Rhodes - Vocals (Background); |

Banjoland [Original] $18.98 Although he was part of the Incredible String Band when they recorded their debut album in 1966, Clive Palmer left the group after its release, largely vanishing into obscurity. He did keep recording and performing, however, and in late 1967, he recorded this solo album, produced by Peter Eden (who had been involved in Donovan's early management and production). Eden couldn't find a label to release it, and the material didn't come out until it was rescued for this 2005 CD reissue. Though its archaic, acoustic folk was, as Eden states in the liner notes, "wonderfully at odds with what the rest of the world was preoccupied with at the time," it's a surprisingly good listen. While all of the songs were traditional tunes (sometimes from quite ancient sources), it's not at all a stodgy revivalist exercise. It's hard to finger why this projects more charm and liveliness than many a similar folk revival recording, but it certainly does. There's a droll irreverence to Palmer's arrangements, banjo playing, and dry vocals, even though he apparently didn't bother to change the gender for passages that seem intended to have been sung by women. He also invests some songs, such as "Ma-Koush-La," "I Hear You Calling Me," and "Smiling Through," with an inviting bittersweet melancholy. There are virtually no nods to rock or pop in the production, but it's not solely Palmer and his banjo; Wizz Jones adds guitar occasionally, and "Stories of Jesus," far less expectedly, is graced with a string quartet. While this isn't incredibly similar to the Incredible String Band's work, it should appeal to many ISB fans, and isn't really that far removed from the ISB's more traditional folk-based stuff, which was heard more on the sole album they did with Palmer in the lineup than on anything else they recorded. The CD adds four quite tasty bonus tracks, two of them being country-swing-oriented Palmer-Jones duets from a late-'60s BBC radio program, the others recorded by the pair at Jones' house in late 1967. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Clive Palmer - Banjo; Wizz Jones - Guitar |

Original Ragtime $18.99 The first of four piano solo albums recorded by Claude Bolling during the 1966-70 period (Bolling is much better known for his classical/jazz pop records and as a leader of big bands), this date finds Bolling showing off his technique on both famous and unfamiliar rags, including "Maple Leaf Rag," James P. Johnson's "Harlem Strut," Tom Turpin's "Saint Louis Rag" and Jelly Roll Morton's "Perfect Rag." In addition, Bolling romps through "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee" and Zez Confrey's novelty ragtime classic "Kitten on the Keys." Although the album was released domestically in 1976 after the brief ragtime craze caused by the movie The Sting, the music was actually recorded ten years earlier in France when ragtime was considered extinct. Fine interpretations. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Claude Bolling - Piano |

Bastards [Original] $12.98 After doing the unthinkable (selling out!) on their commercially minded -- and only -- major-label release March or Die, underground heroes Motörhead thankfully returned to a more familiar sonic formula (extremely loud and fast) on the excellent Bastards. Gloriously distorted thrashers such as "On Your Feet or on Your Knees" and "Death or Glory" set the pace, and "Born to Raise Hell" is undoubtedly one of the band's greatest latter-day classics. As usual, major departures such as the acoustic-driven and socially conscious "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me" stick out like a sore thumb, but the more balanced "Lost in the Ozone" (some acoustic, but also lots of noise) is a pleasant surprise. Though it is often overlooked, this album remains one of the band's strongest releases in the '90s. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music GuidePerformers: Howard Benson - Keyboards; Mickey Dee - Drums; Lemmy Kilmister - Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Bass), Vocals; Würzel - Guitar, Guitar (Rhythm); Zoom - Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic) |

At the Movies [Original] $18.98 Lush, heartfelt, and elegant, At the Movies finds smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz celebrating his favorite movie themes. Featured here are such classic movie melodies as "Over the Rainbow," "The Shadow of Your Smile," and "The Pink Panther" as well as more contemporary songs like "A Whole New World" and the main theme from Schindler's List. Showcased beautifully throughout At the Movies is Koz's deftly melodic and supple saxophone sound, which truly evinces his obvious love of film and film music. It also doesn't hurt that he's often backed by a full orchestra and big band here, adding to the widescreen, cinematic sound he's going for. Also engaging are Koz's guest artist choices, including trumpeter Chris Botti, vocalists Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Donna Summer, and others. ~ Matt Collar, All Music GuidePerformers: Ingrid Bergman - Spoken Word; Larry Farrell - Trombone (Tenor); Marc Goldberg - Bassoon; Ron Jannelli - Bassoon; Birch Johnson - Trombone (Tenor); Diane Lesser - Horn (English), Oboe; Bill Meredith - Horn (English); Joe Passaro - Tympani [Timpani]; Joe Anderer - French Horn; Diane Barere - Cello; Adrian Benjamin - Viola; George Flynn - Trombone (Bass); Crystal Garner - Viola; Chris Hall - Tuba; Julie Landsman - French Horn; Jeanne LeBlanc - Cello; |
