I must be getting bigger because the tub feels smaller every time, thinks the hero of this appealing book. He sits in his bath, playing, remembering, and wondering -- anything but washing. Kevin Henkes, a gifted young author-artist, catches a mood and an experience that are universal and makes them unforgettable.

BTNHResurrection [Clean]

BTNHResurrection [Clean]

$13.98

Almost three years after the epic-length Art of War album and after solo albums by group members Krayzie Bone (Thug Mentality 1999) and Bizzy Bone (Heaven'z Movie), Bone Thugs-N-Harmony returned with a comeback album fittingly named BTNHResurrection. Much has changed in the rap game in just a few short years, however. Bone Thugs were on top of the world between 1995 and 1996, though now they're merely trying to fit in during an era when weed-smoking gangsters have been replaced by champagne-sipping players, and any hint of vocal harmony will get you labeled an R&B act. Over the course of the 16 tracks here, the core trio work to their strengths, constructing dense rhymes and trading off with a smooth flow. It's difficult to escape the feeling that time has passed them by, however, and BTNHResurrection isn't quite the return to old glories fans that must wish it could have been. [BTNHResurrection is also available in a clean version.] ~ John Bush, All Music GuidePerformers: Jimmy "JT" Thomas - Multi Instruments

Breaking Clean

Breaking Clean

$3.48

“A memoir with the fierce narrative force of an eastern Montana blizzard, rich in story and character, filled with the bone-chilling details of Blunt’s childhood. She writes without bitterness, with an abiding love of the land and the work and her family and friends that she finally left behind, at great sacrifice, to begin to write. This is a magnificent achievement, a book for the ages. I’ve never read anything that compares with it.”—James Crumley, author of The Last Good KissBorn into a third generation of Montana homesteaders, Judy Blunt learned early how to “rope and ride and jockey a John Deere,” but also to “bake bread and can vegetables and reserve my opinion when the men were talking.” The lessons carried her through thirty-six-hour blizzards, devastating prairie fires and a period of extreme isolation that once threatened the life of her infant daughter. But though she strengthened her survival skills in what was—and is—essentially a man’s world, Blunt’s story is ultimately that of a woman who must redefine herself in order to stay in the place she loves.Breaking Clean is at once informed by the myths of the West and powerful enough to break them down. Against formidable odds, Blunt has found a voice original enough to be called classic.

The Charm [Clean]

The Charm [Clean]

$18.98

Southern rapper Bubba Sparxxx must have taken the non-response to his 2003 album, the introspective Deliverance, to heart. He's moved out of the Timbaland camp -- although the producer does make an appearance on the infectious "Hey!" -- and into Big Boi's Purple Ribbon crew for his third release, the well-rounded, just-short-of-excellent Charm. Club bangers like the catchy "Ms. New Booty" with Ying Yang Twins are plentiful and there's a great amount of flash and polish, all wrapped up in a tight package with one major exception. After a steady stream of driven numbers that justify this chart-hungrier style for Bubba, the too-sweet, too-sugary "Run Away" sounds American Idol clean as it begs to get a taste of the mainstream. Making up for this is the bouncy and bright "Wonderful," the tense "Otherside" with Petey Pablo, and the low-riding "Claremont Lounge," which brings to mind the great Deliverance with its deep Organized Noize-provided beat. Deliverance is still his great album, but it didn't work so well on the weekend. The Charm, on the other hand, does as it good-times Bubba back into the collective consciousness. [Charm was also made available in a clean version, with all explicit material removed.] ~ David Jeffries, All Music GuidePerformers: Cooley C - Scratching; Bianca Spears - Vocals (Background); Kevin Kendricks - Keyboards; Debra Killings - Vocals; Tony Love - Guitar; Marvin "Chanz" Parkman - Keyboards; Timbaland - Vocals; Jeremy Von Nida - Guitar

Voodoo [Clean]

Voodoo [Clean]

$17.98

Five years after his Brown Sugar album helped launch contemporary R&B, D'Angelo finally returned with his sophomore effort, Voodoo. His soulful voice is just as sweet as it was on Brown Sugar, though D'Angelo stretches out with a varied cast of collaborators, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove and guitarist Charlie Hunter, fellow neo-soul stars Lauryn Hill and Raphael Saadiq, and hip-hop heads like DJ Premier, Method Man & Redman, and Q-Tip. It must have been difficult to match his debut (and the frequent delays prove it was on his mind), but Voodoo is just as rewarding a soul album as D'Angelo's first. [Voodoo was also released in a "clean" edition, containing no profanities or vulgarities.] ~ John Bush, All Music GuidePerformers: Roy Hargrove - Horn; Method Man - Rap; Redman - Rap; Ahmir Khalib Thompson - Drums (Snare); Eddie Alford - Guitar; Mike Campbell - Guitar; D'Angelo - Vocals; Charlie Hunter - Bass, Guitar; Pino Palladino - Bass; James Poyser - Keyboards; Raphael Saadiq - Guitar

Certified [Clean]

Certified [Clean]

$13.98

The money rolls in, the inspiration drains out. It happens to a lot of artists. David Banner, however, does not fall into that camp. Now that he knows he has a lot of people paying attention, built on the popularity of Mississippi: The Album and MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, he's more fired up and outspoken than ever, fearlessly and descriptively expressing the rage he feels for the way his people have been treated throughout history, whether the events went down centuries or weeks ago. (Needless to say, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, going down as he was promoting this album, must be giving him loads of thoughts and feelings to work through for his next release.) As on his past albums, Banner has all the bases covered, so there's also plenty of material to soundtrack an orgy of any variety, and even those moments are intense and sound like very pointed protest songs. Every other chorus seems to be have been written for a mob of some kind, while the production work -- handled mostly by Banner, along with contributions from Jazze Pha, Lil Jon, Maestro, Get Cool, and a couple others -- takes on a number of dimensions without making for a disjointed listen. If Certified has one problem, it's the overabundance of features that eats up too much time. Banner could hold down every aspect of an album on his own, no problem, so all the guest spots show that he's actually the one being supportive. Scanning the list -- from Lil Boosie to Talib Kweli, from Jagged Edge to Too Short -- also demonstrates his range rather than desperation to appeal across styles and ideologies. If the album has a second problem, it's that "Play" is a little too similar to the Ying Yang Twins' "Wait (The Whisper Song)" (also produced by Michael "ColliPark" Crooms), even if it's no less amazing, fitted with screwed-and-chopped sirens and frenzied electronic squiggles (and with that, Ludacris' "Splash Waterfalls" is almost completely erased from existence). Certified certifies that Banner is as crucial to hip-hop in the early 2000s as any other MC. Whether in conscious mode or not, he's at the top, and he's taking all his family and friends with him to celebrate. [A clean version of the album was also released.] ~ Andy Kellman, All Music GuidePerformers: Jazze Pha - Vocals (Background); Laurent "Tippie" Alfred - Guitar; Jake Arnold - Guitar; Michael Crooms - Keyboards; Darren Dodd - Drums;

The Dwarves Must Die

The Dwarves Must Die

$10.98

A band that got kicked off Sub Pop for playing pranks (turns out their guitarist wasn't dead!) shouldn't be releasing albums so well constructed, should they? Album covers with naked/bloody women and midgets, half-hour-long albums and 15 minute shows, and a total aversion to telling the truth give the Dwarves a lower profile than you'd think if you only heard the music. It keeps the band a dirty little secret. If you want in and can stand the guy or girl behind the counter sizing you up for buying an album with such a filthy cover, The Dwarves Must Die is an excellent place to start. Producer Eric Valentine -- the man who gave everyone from Smash Mouth to Queens of the Stone Age his winning slick and loud treatment -- keeps the chaos clear as a bell and makes this the most accessible Dwarves album yet. Luckily, the band is ready for Valentine's cool touch with an inspired, biting set of tunes that put the pedal to the metal. There are punk, garage, and metal sounds, of course, along with the catchy, over the top pop that was featured on 2000's Come Clean and some hip-hop that's just plain fun. Dexter Holland from the Offspring, Nick Oliveri from Queens of the Stone Age, Nash Kato from Urge Overkill, and the man who voiced the original Space Ghost -- Gary Owens -- all show up as guests, but they're only pawns in the Dwarves' deviant game. Running at just over half an hour, The Dwarves Must Die is tight and doesn't wear out its welcome. As much as the Dwarves try to sabotage their own career with a "stay away" attitude, their music keeps getting better and better. If it wasn't for the blood and nudity, they'd be huge. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Blue [Clean]

Of all the second-wave post-grunge bands from 1997, Third Eye Blind cultivated the most dedicated fan base. Sure, Matchbox 20 sold more records, but for TEB devotees, the San Franciscan band carried the torch originally lit by such breakthrough alt-rock acts as U2 and INXS -- big, glossy bands that unabashedly celebrated both hooks and rock classicism. Under the direction of Stephan Jenkins, Third Eye Blind celebrated these same virtues, but since they arrived at a time when there were a lot of glossy, even slick, bands marketed as alternative rock, it's easy to see why many observers believed TEB were no different than the legions of post-grunge rockers who dominated the charts that year. By the 1999 release of Blue, the group's second album, many of their peers from 1997 had faded away. Jenkins must have been aware of the fleeting nature of fandom in the '90s, since he pushes his band hard throughout the album. It's as if he's trying to shake the ghost of "Semi-Charmed Life," the ingratiatingly hummable hit that gave TEB success but pegged them, in many observers' eyes, as a bubblegum one-hit wonder. Blue is certainly somber and serious, even with its moments of levity. Almost too much so. TEB sound a little strained when they earnestly try to rock, and the same problem occasionally plagues their slower songs, though they do sound more self-confident there. This problem surfaces because they sound natural when they're a little loose; at that point, they're not too self-conscious to avoid hooks, which they seem to do quite often on Blue. While this self-consciousness mars Blue, it doesn't ruin it, because it lifts often enough (on "Wounded," "An Ode to Maybe," "Anything," and "Never Let You Go," the album's highlight), and because it announces that they're stronger and more serious than many of their post-grunge peers. It also illustrates what TEB truly excel at -- big, glossy alt-pop in the tradition of U2 and INXS. There's not quite enough of it this time around to make Blue the equal of its predecessor, but it should be enough to please devoted fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Kevin Cadogan - Electric Sitar, Guitar, Piano, Sitar (Electric), Vocals; D.J. The Massacre [Clean]

The Massacre [Clean]

$13.98

Following up one of the biggest debuts in hip-hop history, crack dealer turned charisma dealer 50 Cent makes some bold moves, recycles plenty of old ideas, and sprinkles in some perfect party singles for The Massacre. Crafty man that he is, 50 must have known following up the massive Get Rich or Die Tryin' was going to be extremely difficult, especially for a rapper rightfully known more for creating headlines than rhymes. To cushion the blow, 50 released an album by his G-Unit crew, made numerous guest appearances on other artist's tracks, and helmed ten mixtapes in his G-Unit Radio series. It kept the debut momentum moving and it's half the reason why The Massacre doesn't feel like Get Rich's proper successor, the other half being the album's effortless attitude. That's the most frustrating thing about the otherwise satisfying Massacre. At worst, it feels unfinished, and at best, it feels like a mixtape cobbled together from mostly choice tracks but without that overseer's polish. At a stunning, slightly overstuffed 78 minutes, it's overwhelming, too, but without a perfect flow to hold the listener's hand the whole way through, it's also a testament to 50 and crew that The Massacre doesn't test your patience until after the one-hour mark. Silly and short intro out of the way, the slinky "In My Hood" gets down to business and gives way to four tracks of the same-old, same-old bravado and beats that are still just as stunning and catchy as hell. "I'm Supposed to Die Tonight" and "Gatman and Robbin" are both great tracks from the quirky/macabre house of Eminem, but it's the Fat Joe-dissing "Piggy Bank" that steals the show. Like "Candy Shop," "Outta Control," "Disco Inferno," and on and on, "Piggy Bank" succeeds because of its serviceable rap, believable swagger, inescapable hook, and phatter than phat beats. For those who've had it with the gunshots, the Shady/Aftermath boasting, and the usual "G-G-G-G-Unit!" shouts, The Massacre has just enough surprises. Besides mentioning Kurt Cobain and Ozzy Osbourne, "A Baltimore Love Thing" is the big shocker as 50 poignantly tells the tale of a heroin-addicted girlfriend destroying all that's good. "Ryder Music" is more easygoing than expected, "Build You Up" (featuring Jamie Foxx) is actually sweet, and "God Gave Me Style" has just about the dreamiest beat in the G-Unit universe. Scott Storch, Dr. Dre, and Eminem are the only big names in the producer's chair, but everyone else serves up fine tracks, especially the great Needlz. Guest spots are kept to a bare minimum and besides the intro, skits are nonexistent. Trim a couple tracks and a couple beefs and rearrange the album and you have what sounds like Get Rich's lesser sequel, but The Massacre doesn't look back. It really just wants to challenge other rappers' albums and not its predecessor. Taken that way, it's an excellent effort. ~ David Jeffries, All Music GuidePerformers:

Sex Therapy: The Session [Clean]

Sex Therapy: The Session [Clean]

$13.95

Sex Therapy is an evasive maneuver to prevent Robin Thicke from being pigeonholed as a “grown folks” R&B singer. It’s evident that hits -- more specifically, appealing to younger listeners -- is the goal. While Thicke’s previous album, Something Else, did well on the album charts, it maintained a classicist sound throughout, produced only one major single, and featured only one appearance from a guest MC. Sex Therapy, however, enlists Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, the Game, Kid Cudi, and Nicki “Stick Shift the Ding-a-Ling” Minaj -- not to mention Estelle and Jazmine Sullivan, both of whom contribute excellent background vocals on their respective appearances. Thicke heightens the brashness downplayed on Something Else, best applied on the title track, where the cunning contrast between his masculine certitude and feather-light falsetto is in full effect. That he does it while lifting the melody from “It’s My Party” -- as a near-replication of the pulse from the Art of Noise's “Moments in Love” drifts in the background -- makes it all the more daring and remarkable. Sometimes the results are either dopey (if lighthearted), as on “Meiplé,” or humorously awkward, as on “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy,” where the oft-repeated hook “She shakin’ it for daddy, she shakin’ it for me” must make some listeners think of Thicke and his father instead of just Thicke. The album does not represent a total abandonment of the qualities that have connected with the singer’s adult fans. “Mrs. Sexy,” based on Eric B. & Rakim's Al Green-sampling “Mahogany” (to the point where he does not bother to change a line that references his skin tone), is as buttery and elegant as anything he has recorded. On “Million Dolla Baby,” he takes his Marvin Gaye fixation another step forward, using “Trouble Man” as its backbone; even if it strikes you as corny, you have to admit that it is pretty slick. Above all, he continues to put one of the best voices in R&B to good use. [A clean version of the album was also released.] ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Strength & Loyalty [Clean]

Strength & Loyalty [Clean]

$13.95

The title to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's 2007 comeback album, Strength & Loyalty, must be a reference to their fans. Despite handing in some forgettable efforts, emptying fans' wallets with too many solo and side projects, and promising new product and not delivering repeatedly, Bone always got a pass from faithful. Strength & Loyalty is also too heavy a title for an album so light and slick. Big names like Mariah Carey, Akon, the Game, Swizz Beatz, and Twista all command their tracks, unknowingly stealing from a group that used to be instantly identifiable because of their unique sound and style. This 2007 edition of Bone is missing members Flesh-N-Bone (thanks to incarceration) and Bizzy Bone (thanks to his being Bizzy Bone) and it shows. As a trio Krayzie, Layzie, and distant third Wish are a solid crew, able to deliver good weekend numbers like "Bump in the Trunk," "Lil Love," and "C-Town" (they never forget Cleveland) along with polished gangsta tracks like "I Tried." In the big picture, Bizzy and Flesh are missed, but what's remarkable about Strength & Loyalty is how it makes the listener forget they're missing while in the moment. Numerous melodious hooks in the easy-rolling Bone tradition fog the memory, and guest stars are brought in at just the right moments. Mariah speaks to the commercial possibilities Bone always had, while the Game speaks to how they seemed to never leave the streets. Every song is at least solid and the album flows very well, making it one of the better-built efforts from the house of Bone in nearly a decade. Problem is, this album could have twice the star power and it wouldn't make up for how important Bizzy's strange voice was for the overall chemistry. Strength & Loyalty doesn't overcome its challenges; it just sidesteps them and works hard to reward fans for a decade of patience. It's as good as it can be, and better than expected. Listennn: The Album [Clean]

Listennn: The Album [Clean]

Albums from a hip-hop crew's DJ have been iffy proposals since Terminator X started moonlighting from his usual gig in Public Enemy. Often rappers give their B-list tracks to the DJ album, and there's even more of a threat of no unifying factor to make the album flow. But Terror Squad's DJ Khaled is also a producer, and the host of numerous mixtapes -- where flow really matters -- including one of the best surrounding Lil Wayne's Tha Carter, Vol. 2, and it was up against a lot of stiff competition. While the cover artwork to Listennn: The Album looks very mixtape, Khaled is more a curator of the album, letting tracks fade out to conclusion even though he occasionally add his shout-outs. Whatever he did to land these tracks, it must have been amazing. First off, there's the massive "Problem" featuring Beanie Sigel reflecting on the state of hip-hop from behind prison walls with a hooky "Jay and Dame ain't speakin'/Game and 50 Cent beefin'" chorus over a great Khaled production. Sigel's lyrics will endear the track to every hip-hop fan, but whether you want to pick Kanye West's slick, snide, and so def "Grammy Family" as the runner-up, or the Southern balling "Holla at Me" with superstars Lil Wayne and Paul Wall bouncing off the next in line Rick Ross, depends on whether you vote North or South. The album leans toward the South and collects some tracks that have been making the mixtape rounds for a while toward the end. The selection isn't haphazard and the sequencing is just as good. Like Tony Touch did before him, Khaled has gone from behind the scenes to mixtapes to killer compilation host, all the while keeping his ear to the street. You can reap the benefits here. Results May Vary [Clean]

Results May Vary [Clean]

It took a long, long time for Limp Bizkit to get their follow-up to Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water into the stores. First, guitarist Wes Borland, generally regarded as the band's musical force, up and left the band, and it took a long, long time to find a replacement guitarist. After a national talent search performed at Guitar Center stores, where candidates had to sign contracts that gave up their rights to anything original they played at their audition, Limp Bizkit settled on former Snot guitarist Mike Smith and recorded an album. Then scrapped it. Then they recorded another album. Then scrapped it. They were going through album titles, too -- it was called Bipolar and then, charmingly, Panty Sniffer. Finally, all the sessions and the turmoil were whittled down into one very long album called Results May Vary. Without Borland on the album, Limp Bizkit turns to frontman Fred Durst, who already dominated the band's personality and now must provide direction in addition to bravado. Durst doesn't come up with any new musical ideas, apart from slight hints of Staind and emo on the ballads, and he generally runs amuck, spewing bile at targets including Britney Spears, ranting about how she broke his heart. He complains about being picked on in high school and about radio and MTV playing the same old bands, and invokes icons like Kurt Cobain. Results May Vary would have been improved if the music had a fraction of Durst's anger (no matter how misguided it is) or had energy to match the clown jumping up and down and screaming in front. The Pick of Destiny [Clean]

The Pick of Destiny [Clean]

$8.98

It's easy but not accurate to call Tenacious D a one-joke band, since they do love one joke best of all: that they are the greatest band in the world. It's a credit to Jack Black and Kyle Gass' strengths as writers and performers that at their best they can convince you it's true. Like the best comedians, the key is both in the writing and the delivery: jokes can be good on paper, but they need to be delivered with flair, and few have the flair of Jack Black, who has made megalomania inspiring, even adorable. That quality combined with serious vocal chops -- anybody who saw him on Mr. Show's "The Joke: The Musical" back in 1997 knew that he could sing -- gave Tenacious D both star power and musical substance, while Gass grounds it by giving Jack a comic foil, plus lead guitar and harmony. When it all gels, as it did on their short-lived HBO series and their 2001 debut, it's glorious, but even that 2001 LP indicated a problem with the D: when the scale gets larger, they get smaller, or at least their reason for being begins to unravel. Since the reason their joke works is that JB and KG are underdogs -- they're the best band in the world, it's just that the rest of the world hasn't figured it out yet -- when they're no longer underdogs, they're not quite as funny, or endearing. They're at their best when it's the two of them on-stage, playing acoustic guitars and riffing off each other. They're good enough that they can survive a bigger budget, as the debut illustrates -- it always helps to have Dave Grohl on your side, of course -- but a really big budget is still a problem, as the soundtrack to their big-screen extravaganza, The Pick of Destiny, proves.Jack and Kyle have been promising a cinematic venture chronicling their rise to power since they -- alright, since Jack turned into a star after stealing the show in the 2000 film High Fidelity, and 2006's The Pick of Destiny, made in collaboration with director/musician/prankster Liam Lynch, finally follows through on that promise. Leave aside the merits of the movie and compare the The Pick of Destiny soundtrack to the debut, and it's easy to see that this album is a very different beast than Tenacious D. That first album captured the essence of the original D -- the D that was nothing but Kage and Jables and their guitars -- but pumped up with heaps of electric guitars and thunderous drums from Grohl. It cribbed from a lot, but not all, of their standards, so it felt like a culmination of sorts: it finally felt like the D blossomed into a genuine rock band. In turn, The Pick of Destiny has greater ambitions -- appropriately for a soundtrack, it's big, sweeping, and well, cinematic -- but it doesn't feel like a breakthrough, since Tenacious D already took the D just about as far as they could go musically: it gave them muscle and might, it fleshed out their skeleton, sometimes a little bit too much, yet it worked because it sounded like this must be what JB and KG heard in their heads when they

Electric Circus cost and won Common some fans. It was very exploratory, especially so for a rap album released in 2002, containing developments -- some of which soared, some of which sank -- that few longtime followers could have foreseen. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted by a whole lot of ill-fitting nonsense. With Be, it seems the MC has realized that not every album that's sprawling and eclectic is as good as Electric Ladyland or Songs in the Key of Life. More notably, he might've been struck with the fact that a high percentage of excellent albums are around 40 minutes in length and are built on a unified sound. Be is highly concentrated, containing 11 songs and involving two producers and a small number of guests. It's a 180 degree turn from Electric Circus, and in a bizarre way it's both a progression and a back-to-basics move. Kanye West and Dilla are key to the album's steadiness, rooting the sound in '70s soul and soul-jazz. That's no shakeup, but the two producers deserve some form of award for stringing together a consistent sequence of productions that is never monotonous, dull, or all that flashy. Even lead single "The Corner," heard well before Be's release, falls into the fabric of the album on first listen, as if that were where it belonged all along. Lyrically, Common comes back down to Earth -- the narratives are sharp as ever, the gripes are more like observations than screeds, and the eccentricities need to be teased out rather than swatted away. Be isn't likely to be referred to by anyone as groundbreaking, but it's one of Common's best, and it's also one of the most tightly constructed albums of any form within recent memory. What Goes Up Must Calm Down

What Goes Up Must Calm Down

$14.98

Describing the Faintest Ideas as reminiscent of what might happen if Robert Smith fronted the Clean after they'd all pounded a few cups of espresso is reasonably accurate, but it also shortchanges the high-spirited fun and genuine charm of the group's debut album, 2007's What Goes Up Must Calm Down. While the Faintest Ideas have clear influences in smart, fast indie pop (with a dash of noise added for seasoning), the band's palpable enthusiasm rings clear on all 15 songs (which zip by in less than 29 minutes), and the jagged ring of Christoffer Lärkner and Daniel Svanhög's guitars mesh with an unexpected precision that indicates beneath their frantic exterior, these four young Swedes have no shortage of imagination as well as a clear sonic game plan. And when they sing things like "There's nothing wrong with wearing the same T-shirt day after day," "We are the sissies they call lame," or "Your poems are still quite bad, but not as bad as this," the Faintest Ideas celebrate their geekiness with such a glorious and unselfconscious joy that it's hard to imagine anyone not being won over by them -- not since Jonathan Richman or the Feelies has anyone in rock & roll made their social ineptitude sound so palpable, and so curiously hip at the same time. It's hard to imagine what the approval of indie pop fanatics around the world might do to a band with an outlook like this, but What Goes Up Must Calm Down captures the Faintest Ideas in a state of gleeful innocence, and it's a truly splendid introduction. ~ Mark Deming, All Music GuidePerformers: Martin Cannert - Drums, Percussion; Joel Görsch - Bass, Vocals; Christoffer Lärkner - Guitar, Vocals; Ida Olsson - Vocals; Daniel Svanhög - Guitar, Vocals

Back 2 Da Basics [Clean]

Back 2 Da Basics [Clean]

$17.98

Two big things came into Yo Gotti's life since his last effort, 2003's overlooked Life, was released. First there was his hooking-up with the Cash Money label by way of Gotti's group the Block Burnaz, and then there was his brush with the big time when his fantastic track "Full Time" made an appearance in the film Hustle & Flow. These two events must have given the rapper the framework for Back 2 Da Basics, a solid effort that's cold, hungry, and ambitious without ignoring the weekend and the party time that comes with it. Suggesting the next Robin Hood might be in the crackhouse pushing bricks of drugs , the "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"-styled side of the album is satisfying and acknowledges hard Southern hip-hop's success with respect and a little "it shoulda been me." Tough love abounds on "Cold Game" while "A Part of Thugs" is a gripping tale of heartbreak in the hood, implying that the drug war and intercontinental military wars cut equally deep into relationships. The bolder, Cash Money-flavored tracks are best represented by "I Got Them," which modernizes Baby and Mannie Fresh's "Big Tymers" track into a 2006 crunk attack with help from Lil Wayne. "Gangsta Party" utilizes Bun B, 8 Ball, and a Marvin Gaye sample without squandering any of them, while "That's What They Made It Foe" finds Yo Gotti delivering a T.G.I.F. anthem with help from Pooh Bear and hot producer Scott Storch (Gotti fesses "I paid like ten bricks for this one!"). Some redundant filler towards the end keeps this from being a classic, but Back 2 Da Basics is well rounded and has enough heat to turn this hood-respected rapper into a more high-profile hustler. Factors, such as relatively low levels of research, development and deployment (RD&D) funding and significant barriers to advancement, must be overcome to accelerate innovation in the energy sector. The paper examines four case studies that provide lessons that can strengthen the development of new technology initiatives, which will address the needed balance between climate mitigation and the growing energy demands of the developing world.

Compensating for Wetland Losses Under the Clean Water Act

Compensating for Wetland Losses Under the Clean Water Act

$41.98

Recognizing the importance of wetland protection, the Bush administration in 1988 endorsed the goal of ?no net loss? of wetlands. Specifically, it directed that filling of wetlands should be avoided, and minimized when it cannot be avoided. When filling is permitted, compensatory mitigation must be undertaken; that is, wetlands must be restored, created, enhanced, and, in exceptional cases, preserved, to replace the permitted loss of wetland area and function, such as water quality improvement within the watershed. After more than a dozen years, the national commitment to ?no net loss? of wetlands has been evaluated. This new book explores the adequacy of science and technology for replacing wetland function and the effectiveness of the federal program of compensatory mitigation in accomplishing the nation?s goal of clean water. It examines the regulatory framework for permitting wetland filling and requiring mitigation, compares the mitigation institutions that are in use, and addresses the problems that agencies face in ensuring sustainability of mitigated wetlands over the long term. Gleaning lessons from the mixed results of mitigation efforts to date, the book offers 10 practical guidelines for establishing and monitoring mitigated wetlands. It also recommends that federal, state, and local agencies undertake specific institutional reforms. This book will be important to anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the ?no net loss? issue: policy makers, regulators, environmental scientists, educators, and wetland advocates.

The Neptunes Present... Clones [Clean] [Bonus DVD]

The Neptunes Present... Clones [Clean] [Bonus DVD]

$18.98

When Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams are behind the boards, hit singles are expected, and hit singles are usually granted. For The Neptunes Present...Clones, the tables are somewhat turned; the producers aren't in need of any more hits, but they do the enlisting here, and they snare an all-star cast of featured players who are willing to join up and/or return the favor, all the while reaping the cachet that comes with being in such venerated company. If anything, Clones puts an end to any thought that the duo randomly selects a track from their beat bank when collaborating, since it ably demonstrates how their skills can adapt to any conceivable personality. Williams steps out with some help from Jay-Z on "Frontin'," one of the biggest Neptunes-related singles yet; the light, simple arrangement is ideally suited to Williams' lighthearted falsetto. (It also must be said that no one else could make the line "And I was gon' tear your ass up" seem so charming.) The spare cattle-prod funk of "Light Your Ass on Fire" pings and jolts with sharp zaps, accompanying Busta Rhymes' more sexually aggressive and explicit come-ons. Amidst whirling sirens, Dirt McGirt's turn, "Pop Shit," boasts a comical Looney Tunes-worthy arrangement. (It also must be said that no one but Williams could make a chorus like "Pop sh*t, n*gg*, what's up?" so effective.) "Popular Thug," originally a track on Kelis' import-only Wanderland, gets a deserved new look, with Pusha T's role bumped in favor of Nas, who proceeds to take the track over and knock Kelis into the supporting role. At 18 tracks, there's a little too much to digest, and not everything is top-rate -- but knocking the disc for the fact that a few cuts aren't Top Ten material would only further illustrate how spoiled listeners have become, and how remarkable the Neps' run has been. Besides, you can whittle this disc down to your favorite dozen and have one of the year's best albums. Doing this would hopefully eradicate the middle patch of innocuous rock -- Spymob's "Half-Steering," the High Speed Scene's "F**k n' Spend" -- while retaining the aforementioned highlights, along with saving space for Vanessa Marquez' "Good Girl," which has to be the best ripoff of late-'80s Jam & Lewis-style production. Or you could just take the whole disc as is, as a strong if patchy reminder of the Neptunes' pop prowess. [A clean version of the disc was also made available, with all profanities removed; some clean copies also came with a bonus DVD, which included three videos and an aimless but entertaining glimpse into the Neptunes' world.] ~ Andy Kellman, All Music GuidePerformers: Adam Aaronson - Drums; John Raf Allen - Keyboards;
