Gasoline $12.98 Chad Kroeger isn't as close to Gasoline as he was Theory of a Deadman's 2002 debut, which he co-produced and helped write. But his Nickelback-ian bellow is still a primary influence on Theory frontman and principal songwriter Tyler Connelly, and Gasoline's read of the grunge handbook is just as broad. The acoustic touches on "Hello Lonely" and "Santa Monica" are a respite from the record's processed distortion hammer, but Gasoline's main thrust is Connelly's brooding over a departed girlfriend, as his band methodically transforms 1990s grunge dynamics into 21st century hard rock. Opener "Hating Hollywood" roars on the siphoned power of a familiar riff, "No Way Out" features yowling wah-wah pedal, and "Better Off" is another three minutes of meaty guitar setting up a chorus of "I don't care about anyone/You know that I'm better off." "No Surprise" has a similarly swagger, but with a melody that carries it as a single. Gasoline's remainder drops in a power ballad ("Since You've Been Gone"), a bluesy track ("Hell Just Ain't the Same"), and songs like "Quiver" and "Save the Best for Last" that would slot into anything by Nickelback or Puddle of Mudd. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music GuidePerformers: Denyse Buffum - Viola; Larry Corbett - Cello; Keith Nelson - Strings; Daniel Adair - Drums; Dean Back - Bass; Howard Benson - Keyboards; Tyler Connolly - Guitar, Vocals; Jimmy Crawford - Guitar; Robin Diaz - Drums; Berj Garabedian - Violin; Margaret Wooten - Violin |

Gasoline Days $13.92 Fifteen years separated Eddie & The Hot Rods' fourth album from their fifth - 15 years, during which the membership traveled as far afield as the Inmates and the Damned, and the original band name was invoked but briefly, for a spotty reunion around 1985.Another decade, another try. With Barrie Masters and Steve Nicol, custodians of the mid-80s Rods, finally rejoined by Paul Gray and Dave Higgs - the band's original four piece line-up, no less! - Gasoline Days emerged trailing a lot more than nostalgia behind it. That primal line-up, after all, was responsible for one of the key kickstarts in the entire punk lexicon, the Teenage Depression album which put a voice to the roar of disaffected youth a full year before the Pistols found that sneering did the job just as well. But that was then, this is now, and Gasoline Days emerged as inflammable as a cup of lukewarm tea, comfortable rock for comfortable rockers, with even Higgs' trademark stropped-razor guitar clogged up by the soap. Masters works himself up to a bellow ocasionally, but he doesn't sound angry, just a little peeved. And Gray, who once contributed mightily to some of the best records the Damned ever made, might as well have served time in Asia for all he brings out of the experience. The songs aren't terrible - they're not even bad. They're just anonymous. And if that's what Eddie & The Hot Rods reformed to accomplish, then Gasoline Days is an unmitigated triumph, and it completes a perfect transition as well. From teenage depression to mid-life crisis. Clever stuff! ~ Dave Thompson, All Music GuidePerformers: Mick Rogers - Fender Stratocaster, Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals, Vocals (Background); Paul Gray - Bass, Guitar (Electric), Organ (Hammond), Piano, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Steve Nicol - Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Vocals (Background) |

Cigarettes and Gasoline $9.93 Life is full of comings and goings, meetings and leavings, happiness and heart wrenching sorrow. Former Tonic frontman Emerson Hart has been touched by them all, and on his debut solo album, Cigarettes and Gasoline, he delves deep into life's constantly shifting currents. The title track is the most obviously autobiographical, as the singer/songwriter conjures up his hometown childhood, and its sights and smells. Its an achingly lovely song, shrouded in nostalgia, sorrow, and with a flicker of hope for the future. "Green Hills Race for California" is wrapped in yearning, this time not for a father taken away far too soon, but for friends and a lover of old, while the equally evocative "Vanity" muses over the future. Like most of us, Hart isn't sure whether he's ready to run toward it or away from it, and romance leaves him similarly conflicted. On the infectious, rocking "Run To" he wants more, on "Devastation Hands" he's the giving one. Shifting persona on "If You're Gonna Leave" he's damn cold, yet on the lush "When She Loves You" he's head over heels over love. Inevitably, though, relationships end in tears, as "Flyin'" describes, yet when love runs aground, how much better to both walk away with dignity, as Hart does on "I Wish the Best for You," a number destined to become perhaps the greatest break-up song of all time. Magnificently produced, and with inspired arrangements ranging from rousing power ballads to luminescent acoustic pieces, infectious pop-flecked tracks to angular rockers. The music may be eclectic, but the memorable, introspective lyrics are this album's defining glory. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide |

The Story of Gasoline $12.98 Some of the press Rosavelt were getting around the time of their third album was peppered with Replacements comparisons, but The Story of Gasoline seems more linked to mainstream heartland rock than the punkier Replacements were. It's positioned somewhere between accomplished roots rock & roll and an indie rock sensibility, and thus it makes sense that it was produced by Don Dixon, whose resumé included several such fence-straddling acts. Christopher Allen's brusque, slightly hoarse vocals and the well-timed, anthemic backup harmonies are the key factors that elevate this slightly above the average for a style that had been mined pretty heavily in the two decades or so prior to this release. Fleeting intimacies, painful breakups, insecurities, psychic torment, and the emptiness of living without a relationship are themes that bounce around much of the album, and while Allen sings and writes like he means it, there's also some predictability to how these issues are addressed in song here. At least he has the gumption to use some language that doesn't beat around the bush, opening "The Last Heartache" with the declaration "a big bang, a last f*ck," and admitting in "Desperate for Cool" to being "such a fool for going down on it, such a fool for going down on you." ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Christopher Allen - Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals; Don Dixon - Vocals (Background); Keith Hanna - Bass, Vocals (Background) |

The Gasoline Age $14.98 Having unintentionally pulled off a "Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" that makes the (equally accidental) Sex Pistols look like rank amateurs, Fred M. Cornog finally reappears with LP number four. A few years ago, he signed to a major label that subsequently folded. So he never recorded a note for them, but got to keep most of his generous advance. Good things sometimes happen to good people: this lightning stroke of outrageous luck meant that the reclusive but affable, well-loved solo songwriter could move his home studio out of New York to a small house in the New Jersey town of his youth. The first result is The Gasoline Age, an album that revolves around Cornog's modest but buoyant charm. Not that he's lost his throbbing melancholia or overriding sense of the shy underdog having his day. But somehow, the boy seems jazzed, more contented behind even his most pointed little barbs such as "All You Little Suckers" and "Shiny, Shiny Pimpmobile." With a little more space to set up his microphones than a tiny corner of a cramped Queens living room, Cornog's self-production seems more expansive, brighter but not glossy, warmer but no less homespun than earlier efforts such as 1994's Poor Fricky and 1996's Mel. His songs still come as aural tapestries of ringing guitar chords, mood keyboards, pitter-patter drum machine, and that reassuring, vulnerable but determined voice. They just seem to glisten more now. With so long to stockpile, handsome Freddie is overflowing with tunes just waiting to be discovered, like chocolate bars in gold paper wrapping, or little jewels in tissue paper. The mini-Spector may never play a live gig in his life, still recovering from his post-high school alcoholism and homelessness nearly two decades ago, but you can bet that several of these compositions will again be performed by other bands on stages soon. A knack is a knack, and a Cornog tune comes complete with all the right nuances and playful touches behind his straightforward melodies. It's an LP like a little-'burb New Jersey lemonade stand in summer, friendly conversation with every cup sold. Like the old Ian Dury song, with a little well-earned good fortune, Cornog has reasons to be cheerful, and you can hear it. ~ Jack Rabid, All Music Guide |

Sex and Gasoline $15.99 Sex and Gasoline is Rodney Crowell's first record in three years, where he goes further inside but pulls out accessible and jagged observations on the conflicting poles in what it means to be a conscious human being who struggles with unconscious urges. In these songs he also investigates what it means to be a man who tries -- and fails a lot -- to empathize with and respect women in a culture that, whether it admits it or not, hates them. Produced by Joe Henry and performed by his own nearly ubiquitous sound-painting crew of drummer Jay Belleros, bassist David Pilch, keyboardist Patrick Warren, pedal steel, mandolin, and dobro master Greg Leisz, and guitar boss Doyle Bramhall III, this is Crowell at his most direct and dense: he channels many other songwriters, but as always he remains completely his own man. The title track opens the set with a mutant acoustic blues; it works with a culture-jamming sense of poetry, with images as angry as Steve Earle's (without the autodidacticism) yet as dense and raggedly elegant as Bob Dylan's. Henry's killer band adorns Crowell's blur of images with a strident yet warm piano, a mandolin, strummed layers of acoustic guitar, and a throbbing upright bassline walking the snare toward his indictment of how we view women, what we expect of them, and an exhortation to admit it. This is underscored on the ballad "Moving Work of Art," where Crowell implicates himself as one who objectifies women despite his intentions -- that he can use the language employed here points to his guilt. He tells a story, but uses the most poignant images to offer its truth -- he doesn't expect you to take his word for it (even when he flips the coin and shines a light on those who understand this objectification but seek it for personal gain). The fat, warm bassline, fingerpicked guitars, and pedal steel offer an instrumental mix that invokes reverie, a look through the mirrored glass darkly. Rounding out this amazing consecutive trio is "The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design." Pulsing with fingerpicked steel, shuffling chunky acoustics, soft toms, and a blanketed bass drum, we get this: "If I could have just one wish/Maybe for an hour/I'd want to be a woman/And feel that phantom power/Maybe I'd want to stick around for awhile/Until my heart got broke/Maybe then I could find out if I'm a half decent man/Or if I'm just a joke..." There are less topical offerings here as well, the duet with Henry on the stunning "I've Done Everything I Can," populated by two protagonists on complementary sides of a conversation on regret, grief, and the difficulty in starting over after surrendering to loss. Henry's delivery is philosophical and empathic; Crowell's is bewildered and broken, but resilient. Conversely, "Funky and the Farm Boy," is a swaggering, strutting, good-time blues groove about sexual obsession, and the band gets to cut loose a bit, thanks to Bramhall's guitars and backing vocalists Nikki Harris and Sister Jean McLain. Gasoline Engine Management $89.48 The BOSCH handbook series on different automotive technologies has become one of the most definitive sets of reference books that automotive engineers have at their disposal. Starting with a brief review of the beginnings of automotive history, this book discusses the basics relating to the method of operation of gasoline-engine control systems. The descriptions of cylinder-charge control systems, fuel-injection systems (in-take manifold and gasoline direct injection), and ignition systems provide a comprehensive, firsthand overview of the control mechanisms indispensable for operating a modern gasoline engine. The practical implementation of engine management and control is described by the examples of various Motronic engine-management systems and of the control and regulation functions integrated in this particular management system. The 3rd edition offers new or completely revised chapters in the following areas - High pressure pumps for direct gasoline injection; Mixture formation for manifold injection; Gasoline engines fuelled by natural gas; Catalytic exhaust-gas treatment; Diagnostics. A key chapter looks at emission control legislation and provides an insight into the complexity of the statutory provisions. |

Automatic $11.88 New York's Turbo A.C.'s have changed little for their fourth full-length outing, this time for Gearhead -- the come-hither female cover star is here, as are the 12 shards of greaser punk that make up Automatic. Led by the searing vocals of Kevin Cole, who just might gargle gallstones regularly, the A.C.'s run through the entire album in a little over half an hour. And while it's easy to accuse them and their peers in New Bomb Turks and the Supersuckers of one-dimensionality, why would you? Grease monkey rock & roll such as this isn't created for commercial gain or mass acceptance. Besides, fans of the Turbo A.C.'s and the rest likely don't want these guys to change -- if they did, someone might get their head kicked in. Musically, Automatic sticks to furious, lockstep punk anthems like "Mafioso" (a superb opener) and "Perfect Crime." Of note is "The Future." A white-hot screed against a high-and-mighty ex-girlfriend, the track is dominated by Cole's sneering anger, which, when focused on one person, is even more formidable. The song is also a nice, R-rated update of the Monkees' "Stepping Stone." "Way of the Devil" is colored with true crime soundbites and atmospheric reverb guitar; it's easy to imagine the song in black-and-white, the soundtrack to a teenage hoodlum crime spree. The band's rambling, raucous cover of the Shadows' classic "Apache" only adds to this image. While nothing on Automatic features a memorable hook beyond its numerous "woah woahs!" and "oh yeahs!," the album can nevertheless be enjoyed in the same way a beer can is smashed -- quick, with one satisfying motion that's over before it begins, but is still a giddy rush. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music GuidePerformers: Kevin Cole - Guitar, Vocals; Mike Dolan - Bass, Vocals; Kevin Prunty - Drums, Vocals |

Burritos and Gasoline $17.48 After more than twenty years of bad decisions and spectacular personal failures, Frank Stevens, a lifelong underachiever, needs a drastic change. The day he is unceremoniously fired from his job he arrives home to find empty space. All of his belongings are gone, and so is his live-in girlfriend, Jackie. But things only get worse. Four months later, on the brink of eviction and vaguely suicidal, Frank's salvation appears in the form of Danny Loughman, a nearly forgotten and barely recognizable childhood friend. Danny asks for what seems like a simple favor: a ride home. Easy enough, until Frank learns that "home" is a thousand miles away from his run-down, suburban Connecticut apartment. Seeing Danny's request as an opportunity to escape his miserable existence, Frank spontaneously embarks on a four-day long road trip with his old friend. The journey forces Frank to evaluate his true character and discover the man he still could be. He has a chance at redemption if he can pull himself together, provided he isn't completely insane. |
