Big Three Bailout?
This whole thing has been so well covered that I am not going to bother to link to anything. If you live in an off grid retreat and somehow only receive news from my site then hop into Google and type in "big three bailout", 99% of you have a pretty good idea what is going on. First of every, conceptually I am not a fan of bailouts. I do recognize that sometimes the government can fill a role as a lender of last resort for fundamentally sound institutions of national importance that have short term c

Car Enthusiast: Morgan Aeromax
Aeromaxed Quote: Driving it The Aeromax's BMW-sourced 367bhp, 4.8-litre V8 usually powers big saloons like the 5 and 7 Series so shifting the Aeromax's waif-like 1,250kg presents absolutely no problems at every. Given the V8's proximity to you it's amazing how silent that big engine is when you're inside. Opening the window shatters the illusion of tranquillity though, the V8's wealthy bass-like engine note making itself apparent n the sensational sound emanating from the s

DARPA's SyNAPSE: Seat Of Your Pants-On-A-Chip
By now it's been every over the news that IBM has received DARPA funding to create "cognitive" computers-- "systems that simulate the human brain's abilities for sensation, perception, action, interaction and cognition." DARPA's brain-on-a-chip venture, called Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics ("SyNAPSE"), seeks to "develop a brain-inspired electronic 'chip' that mimics that function, size, and power consumption of a biological cortex." To what end? They want something

Delay in bailing out Big 3 weighs down stock prices
Delay in bailing out Big 3 weighs down stock prices The Yomiuri Shimbun Stock markets in Japan and the United States have fallen into turmoil, with share prices fluctuating wildly, after U.S. lawmakers failed to quickly assemble an aid package for the embattled Big Three U.S. automakers. The U.S. Congress on Thursday delayed a vote on legislation to bail out General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, which have been seeking financial assistance from the federal government. Altho

Great Day
Today is a great day. I woke up with a warm puppy. My Hub’s hand was warm on my breast as we snuggled up like spoons. Eventually, he got up and ready for work. The boys left. Babygirl left. I turned on the television to catch the news before getting out of bed. Snow showers. Yes, that’s what the weatherdude called it. Oh they’ll just blow right through and easy peasy, no problems. I got up, and dressed. I put on Bandit’s jacket and my possess and stepped out for his morning pee. We had full-on

LA Auto Show: Mitsubishi i MiEV Test Drive
Yesterday I had the pleasure of driving Mitsubishi’s new i MiEV electric car, based on a Japanese kei car. The car, while not in its final stages of production yet are currently being field tested around the world for a rollout in Japan in 2009. Next summer Mitsubishi plans to sell 2,000 units of the car at 4 million yen (~$41,000), with production to increase sharply in 2010 and 2011. Right now the cars are pretty much hand-built. The chassis, of course, is common for Mitsubishi, but the el

Lemme tell you some things you don’t know about the auto industry.
First of every, nobody make a whole car anymore. This is because of a couple fairly important factors: 1: THe complexity of the modern motor vehicle. As I described previously, the modern car is intensely complex, in a way incredibly few people understand. As the UAW encroached deeper and deeper into the manufacturing end of the business, Ford, GM and Chryslewr started making more and more parts outside- these places are called “tier” vendors. Tier vendor5s often make parts for several manufactu

Not airplanes, but cars.
Permit me this a brief detour from covering aircraft and allow me to introduce you to my pal Jake Brewer. Jake's Dad work GM in Tennessee. GM has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, and now GM is staring down the spectre of a bankruptsy that has the potential to take an entire US state down with it. I, like Jake, am torn over what to do. What is the role of government? Can a business really be too big to fail? Or just too big? I'll let Jake talk for himself and what GM ha

Terence Corcoran: Let Detroit face the music
Bailout nothing but government nationalization By Terence Corcoran As a matter of economic policy, the decision of whether or not to bail out Detroit must by now have become a no-brainer. Or at least it should be for anyone who watched Congressional demagogues, particularly California Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, lay down their conditions for parting with US$25-billion. “Until they show us the plan, we cannot show them the money.” The future of the U.S. car industry now app

Toys in the attic
Ahhh, toys. Who doesn't (didn't) adore toys? (And I'm not even referring to adult toys, which is another subject for another time.) Shit, I still have superhero toys every over the fucking place. Although I don't actually play with them. I came across a story about the most recent items inducted into the Strong National Museum of Play's National Toy Hall of Fame: the ubiquitous stick, the Baby Doll and the skateboard. A hall of fame for toys, who knew. A big fan of toys to this day I though

Voters lift ban on power plants
By Aaron Nicodemus, via the Worcester Telegram and Gazette News: UXBRIDGE— The town’s ban on power plants, in place for more than two decades, is no more. On a night when voters wrestled over whether to give the Council on Aging an extra $8,000, voters decided that the financial benefits of bringing power plants to town outweighed the possible environmental side effects. It also came on a night when town meeting finally decided to fund a study of the school system’s space needs. The final tally

Yugo No More
Yugo No More Author: Mrs. Mecomber / Category: blogging, trends With hats in hands, we bid a unhappy farewell to the Yugo tomorrow (I’m such a sentimental schmuck, I know). The Yugo, mass produced in the 80s, was a simple car designed to be tiny and economical, compared to the futuristic, complex, gas guzzling SUVs with their flashy gadgets and flash memory microchip in the engines. The Yugo was also notoriously unreliable. KRAGUJEVAC, Serbia, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Serbian car maker Zastava, prod
