The Last Miles $17.98 “Cole does for Miles’s late work what Ian MacDonald’s Revolution in the Head does for the Beatles, examining each album in meticulous detail.” —Time Out“As with any good musical biography, Cole . . . made me think again about those albums such as Siesta, You’re Under Arrest, and The Man with the Horn that are now stashed in my attic.”—London Times“In the flurry of books since [Miles Davis’s] death, none has dealt in depth with the music of this period. Music writer George Cole fills this gap. . . . a rich and rewarding read.”—Gazette (Montreal)“A fascinating book.”—Mojo“A singular look into the last stage of Davis’s long, somewhat checkered career gained from various sources, which at the same time gives a picture of the modern music business.”—Midwest Book Review“There are large chunks of fresh material here. . . . Fill[s] in quite a few gaps and dismisses blanket condemnations of [Miles’s] pop phase.”—Jazzwise“Thank you for telling it like it was!”—Randy Hall, singer and guitarist“Very moving, emotional material.”—Gordon Meltzer, Miles’s last road manager and executive producer of Doo-Bop |

A Thousand Miles of Dreams $5.48 A Thousand Miles of Dreams recounts the evocative and intimate biography of two intensely rivalrous Chinese sisters, a writer and a doctor, whose eventful lives took very different paths in their quest to be independent women. They were Chinese modern girls who sought to forge their own way during a period of social revolution that unsettled relations between men and women, even among nations. Daughters of an imperial scholar-official and a concubine, the two sisters followed professional trajectories unimaginable to their parents' generation. |

The New Miles Davis Quintet $11.98 Although they had made a few slightly earlier cuts that would later be issued on Columbia, the first full-length album by the Miles Davis Quintet is quite intriguing in that it gives one a look at tenor saxophonist John Coltrane when he still had a hesitant style. This audiophile CD reissue has the same music that is currently available on an Original Jazz Classics set: five jazz standards plus "The Theme." Unlike Coltrane, who would develop rapidly within the next year, Miles was already very much in his prime, sounding quite lyrical on "Just Squeeze Me" and "There Is No Greater Love," and the classic rhythm section (pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones) was quickly starting to gel. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Paul Chambers - Bass, Bass (Upright); Alice Coltrane - Piano; John Coltrane - Sax (Tenor); Miles Davis - Trumpet; Red Garland - Piano; Philly Joe Jones - Drums |

Miles in the Sky [Bonus Tracks] $8 With the 1968 album Miles in the Sky, Miles Davis explicitly pushed his second great quintet away from conventional jazz, pushing them toward the jazz-rock hybrid that would later become known as fusion. Here, the music is still in its formative stages, and it's a little more earth-bound than you might expect, especially following on the heels of the shape-shifting, elusive Nefertiti. On Miles in the Sky, much of the rhythms are straightforward, picking up on the direct 4/4 beats of rock, and these are illuminated by Herbie Hancock's electric piano -- one of the very first sounds on the record, as a matter of fact -- and the guest appearance of guitarist George Benson on "Paraphernalia." All of these additions are tangible and identifiable, and they do result in intriguing music, but the form of the music itself is surprisingly direct, playing as extended grooves. This meanders considerable more than Nefertiti, even if it is significantly less elliptical in its form, because it's primarily four long jams. Intriguing, successful jams in many respects, but even with the notable additions of electric instruments, and with the deliberately noisy "Country Son," this is less visionary than its predecessor and feels like a transitional album -- and, like many transitional albums, it's intriguing and frustrating in equal measures. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: George Benson - Guitar, Guitar (Electric); Ron Carter - Bass; Miles Davis - Trumpet; Herbie Hancock - Piano, Piano (Electric); Wayne Shorter - Sax (Tenor); Tony Williams - Drums |

Miles $13.98 For more than forty years Miles Davis has been in the front rank of American music. Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles is one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. The subject of several biographies, now Miles speaks out himself about his extraordinary life.Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he has encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life. But above all, Miles talks about music and musicians, including the legends he has played with over the years: Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Trane, Mingus, and many others. The man who has given us some of the most exciting music of the past few decades has now given us a compelling and fascinating autobiography, featuring a concise discography and thirty-two pages of photographs. |

112 Miles to the Pin $3.98 For many golfers, the innocent thrill of striking a drive clearly, avoiding a deep sand-trap, or holing out an unlikely putt is all they need to make a round (or a whole year) of golf memorable. But there’s a group of modern players in search of something more. They’ve rediscovered the magic of the game in “extreme” golf, and their adventures are about to inspire golfers everywhere. Here are players like Andre Tolme, who decided to turn Mongolia into a par 11,880 course and Torsten Schilling, who spends his weekends teeing off from the side of his boat aiming for sites back on shore. From New Zealand’s naked open to golf in Antarctica, Duncan Lennard describes a world at the very edge of the sport. |

Miles Davis: The Columbia Years 1955-1985 $49.98 This was the first real attempt by Columbia to make any comprehensive sense of Miles Davis' colossal output for the label. This set, then, was bound to be controversial no matter how it turned out, but even so, Columbia could have done better with a strictly chronological approach. Instead producer/compiler Jeff Rosen had the cockeyed notion of organizing each of the original five LPs around a single theme. Disc one was called Blues, Disc two was devoted to Standards, Disc three had Miles Davis Originals, Disc four was something vaguely entitled Moods and all of the electric recordings were segregated on Disc five (the CDs naturally screw up the "logic" with overlaps). Thus, the first four sections jam together all kinds of unrelated sessions from different eras and the listener never gets any idea of how Miles' music evolved and changed over the years. There are only four outtakes, three of which are gratuitous alternate takes, and the fourth is a live version of "I Thought About You." However, The Columbia Years stands as a casual collage -- the only way, actually, to acquire a bop-to-rock, fairly representative selection of Miles from those decades in one package. Also one must admit that the electric section, despite the chronological chaos, is put together very cleverly, opening with precisely the hottest stretch of music from Live-Evil (the opening 3-and-a-half-minutes of "Sivad") and closing with the long, swaggering "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" from Bitches Brew. Nat Hentoff's biographical essay makes good reading -- and of course, along the way you'll hear some of the greatest music of the 20th century. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music GuidePerformers: Miles Davis - Electric Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Keyboards, Trumpet; Randy Hall - Mini Moog, Moog Synthesizer, Synthesizer; Jack Knitzer - Bassoon; Badal Roy - Tabla; Collin Walcott - Sitar; Danny Bank - Clarinet (Bass), Saxophone; Billy Barber - Tuba; James Buffington - French Horn, Horn; Bennie Maupin - Clarinet (Bass); |

Fifty Miles to Travel $16.38 This great country duo was in its prime when the material on this 24-song compilation was recorded for King from the mid-'40s to the mid-'50s. This isn't the cream of that crop, as much of that was been collected on an earlier, superior Ace anthology, Freight Train Boogie. As a secondary collection, however, it presents some always respectable and often very good hillbilly music. It concentrates on sides that hadn't previously been reissued on CD, or reissued at all, including half a dozen outtakes and alternate takes that hadn't been released anywhere, and repeating little from the Freight Train Boogie compilation. While there's some hot country boogie here, there's a little bit more weight given to folky, more traditional-sounding songs such as "Midnite Special" and "Dis Train Am Bound for Glory" than there is on the best Delmore Brothers anthologies. It's often a little more sedate and less innovative than their best King stuff, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of exceptional harmonizing and bluesy guitar picking (as on the aptly titled "Fast Express"), occasionally embellished by the harmonica of Wayne Raney. Although most of these are from the less traveled corners of the duo's King output, the CD does have one of their most famous classics, "Blues Stay Away from Me," and -- of more interest to collectors -- a previously unissued alternate take of the song. There also unfortunate unflattering slang references to African-Americans in the otherwise stellar "Mississippi Shore," sung with a casual geniality suggesting such terminology was hardly out of the ordinary among the white Southern country audience when this single came out in 1947. The tracks are taken directly from the original acetates, resulting in a clear sound that's quite exceptional for reissues of country music from this period. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide |

A Proper Introduction to Miles Davis: Enigma $9.98 Great Britain's Proper imprint has been releasing terrific multi-disc boxed collections by many major artists in the genres of jazz, blues, and country since the 1990s. On occasion, they've also issued double-disc retrospectives. These offerings have been long on detail in terms of not only volume, but great sound, accurate discographical information, and best of all, they retail at a very attractive price point. Which brings us to their single-disc series, "Proper Introduction To..." In this case, it's Miles Davis. The bottom line is that any single-disc collection attempting to offer a righteous introduction to the work of Miles is going to fall somewhat short. That makes sense since he was not only at the forefront of so many different periods in jazz, but he also either created them or was a founding father, at the very least. This 16-cut set showcases Miles mainly in his early days as a leader, recorded for Prestige, though there are a couple of sides he cut for Blue Note and one with his first real boss, Charlie Parker. Brilliant artists such as Sonny Rollins, Walter Bishop, Jr., Jackie McLean, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Max Roach, Tommy Potter, Art Blakey, Oscar Pettiford, and Kenny Clarke all accompany Davis here in various places. The music is either solid bebop or early hard bop, and all of it is pre-Coltrane or Gil Evans. That said, while this isn't any kind of a definitive collection, all of the sides here, if you don't already have them, make excellent cases for investigating this early period more deeply, since there is nary a track of music during the Prestige years that isn't worth hearing. This is all inspired, most of it quite fiery, and brilliantly executed not just by the soloists, but by the various ensembles as well. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Walter Bishop, Jr. - Piano; Art Blakey - Drums; Kenny Clarke - Drums; Gil Coggins - Piano; Miles Davis - Trumpet; Jimmy Heath - Sax (Tenor); Percy Heath - Bass; J. The Very Best $11.98 As part of Blue Note's The Very Best series, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins is spotlighted on seven tracks recorded during his short two-year tenure, 1956 and 1957, with the label. Rollins is backed up by fellow Blue Note alumni Donald Byrd, J.J. Johnson, Art Blakey, and Horace Silver, among others, making this a prime sampler for the novice at a mid-line price. ~ Al Campbell, All Music GuidePerformers: Art Blakey - Drums; Donald Byrd - Trumpet; J.J. Golden Miles: Australian Progressive Rock $47.99 Reissue specialists Raven Records (Australia) -- co-founded by Oz Rock's human encyclopedia Glenn A. Baker -- have done a sterling job over the years of resurrecting great music from the past. This two-CD set (two and a half hours of playing time) is a proverbial cornucopia of intriguing, and largely forgotten, prog rock from some fine antipodean exponents of the genre. Actually, many of these artists found success in the mainstream Down Under, but Golden Miles showcases them in their more adventurous moments. The stylistic range across the album's 30 tracks is quite stunning, but certainly this is progressive rock -- just don't expect everything to sound like King Crimson. Ear-catching tracks include the jazz-slanted "Make Your Stash" by legendary Aussie rockers Daddy Cool (best known for their rock & roll anthem "Eagle Rock"), the Zappa-ish "Make It Begin" by Sons of the Vegetal Mother (also fronted by Daddy Cool singer Ross Wilson), and the quaking "'Til My Death" by avant-garde metallurgists Buffalo (from their landmark 1973 album, Volcanic Rock). But the curio of curios is "Seasons of Change" by Fraternity, a tuneful, psychedelic folk-rock number sung by none other than a pre-AC/DC Bon Scott. Excellent liner notes include a capsule bio (written by Ian McFarlane) on each band and an overview of the period (from Baker). Probably of most interest to collectors, aficionados, and those who personally remember this musical chapter of yore, many casual listeners will also find Golden Miles very entertaining fare. ~ Adrian Zupp, All Music Guide |

Very Saxy $9.98 Tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and his quartet (which includes organist Shirley Scott, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Arthur Edgehill) welcome three immortal tenors (Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb and Buddy Tate) to what became a historic and hard-swinging jam session. On three blues, an original based on the chord changes of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Lester Leaps In," the four tenors battle it out and the results are quite exciting. The spirited music on this memorable LP will hopefully be reissued on CD eventually, for the performances live up to their great potential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Arnett Cobb - Sax (Tenor); Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - Sax (Tenor); Miles Davis - Trumpet; George Duvivier - Bass; Arthur Edgehill - Drums; Coleman Hawkins - Sax (Tenor); Shirley Scott - Organ, Organ (Hammond); Buddy Tate - Sax (Tenor) |

Playlist: The Very Best of the Byrds $7.98 This is hardly the very best of the Byrds, although there are certainly some of the group's best songs here, including the iconic cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" that introduced Dylan, folk-rock and the Byrds to the world in one sharp, jangling shot, as well as Gene Clark's "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," the John Coltrane-inspired "Eight Miles High," another brilliant Dylan cover, "My Back Pages," and Roger McGuinn's mythic and mystic "Chestnut Mare," but this band recorded so many great tracks that what's here just seems to barely scratch the surface. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide |

Thank U Very Much: The Very Best of Scaffold $13.98 This 26-song anthology is almost identical in track selection to the most comprehensive prior Scaffold collection, Abbey Road Decade 1966-1971, released just four years before this CD. And indeed, the track selection isn't too different from the only other Scaffold anthology, See for Miles' Singles A's & B's. It's a bit puzzling as to why this body of work, not in terribly high demand at any rate, was packaged with such slight alternations so soon after the Abbey Road Decade 1966-1971 disc. Anyway, assuming this is the first Scaffold best-of you come across, it does its job well, spanning 1966 to the early '70s, and naturally including their two big British hits of the late '60s, "Thank U Very Much" and "Lily the Pink." The music, frankly, is an erratic mix of comedy and rock that's much patchier and rather more twee than, say, that of fellow U.K. humorists the Bonzo Dog Band. There are plenty of singsong novelties that are more silly than funny, sometimes annoyingly so -- a description, unfortunately, that could apply to those two big hits. On the other hand, when some solid pop/rock melodies and Mike McGear's voice come more to the forefront, there are some nicely subtle, witty, and very British slices of vaudevillian pop -- "Do You Remember?," "1-2-3" (with its weird barely audible sitar twangs behind the whistling melody), the cool jazz stylings of "Today," and the Baroque psychedelia of "Buttons of Your Mind." Elsewhere, "Uptown & Downtown," from 1969, is an uncharacteristic detour into relatively gutsy soul-rock (or is it a satire, perhaps?); "Liverpool Lou" is a wobbly adaptation of a traditional folk number; and "Take It While You Can," from 1970, sounds like it just might be an irreverent John Lennon pastiche. It's uneven, but it's periodically rewarding for fans of peculiarly British comedy pop whimsy, though the liner notes are sketchy and the discographical information patchily inadequate. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Mike McGear - Vocals; Roger McGough - Vocals |

The Very Best of Stray Cats $11.98 This 2004 collection from BMG International features 17 cuts from the rockabilly revivalists, including the international hits "Rock This Town," "Stray Cat Strut," "Rumble in Brighton," "(She's) Sexy + 17," and "18 Miles to Memphis." As far as Stray Cats anthologies go, this one is as good as Capitol's Greatest Hits or Runaway Boys: A Retrospective '81-'92, making it an excellent choice for both longtime fans and the yet to be converted. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide |

Miles to Miles: In the Spirit of Miles Davis $17.98 The award-winning producer/composer/keyboardist/synthesizer arranger Jason Miles pays tribute to one of his major influences, the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis. With Miles to Miles a 12-track disc featuring symbolic titles that recognize some of Davis' exquisite tastes, Jason Miles has created a masterful musical program that is resplendent with both the spirit and creative vibe of the legendary trumpeter. Jason Miles' masterful programming and synth arrangements expand the musical ideas into an otherworldly realm that was unheard of during Davis' modal period and reign with arranger/orchestrator Gil Evans in the late '50s and early '60s. The songs here are truly 21st century concepts. The set opens with "Ferrari," a reference to Davis' red motorcar and the high-speed drive that the two musicians took up the Pacific coast. The energetic rhythms capture this trip's velocity as saxophonist Michael Brecker adds an angular melody line over the electronic funk. DJ Logic's turntables add extra dimensions and colors. "Butter Pecan" is a take on the trumpeter's love of butter pecan ice cream. This track is great and features an overdubbed sax section played by Gerald Albright and a solo by Adam Holtzman. One of the brightest spots on this amazing recording is "Flamenco Sketches,"the Spanish-influenced song from Davis' classic 1959 album titled Kind of Blue. With updated lyrics and instrumental stylings written to the melodies of Davis' and John Coltrane's original solos, and guest appearances from pianist Keiko Matsui and guitarist Marc Antoine, this song comes alive with the beauty and spirit of Davis' genius. Miles to Miles was inspired by the first time Jason Miles ever met Miles Davis, who sketched a little stick figure on a note pad and autographed it "Miles to Miles" with a little trumpet. With the addition of some of contemporary jazz's most in-demand musicians, these 12 musical stories tell a tale of their creativity, inspiration, and friendship, and aptly demonstrate Jason Miles' capabilities as a true innovator. ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music GuidePerformers: Roger Blanc - Chart; Dean Brown - Chart, Guitar; Graham Haynes - Ambience, Cornet; Romero Lubambo - Chart, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Vocals; Jason Miles - Chart, Drums, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, Keyboards, Organ, Organ (Hammond), Sampling, Synthesizer Bass, Wurlitzer; DJ Log |

The Very Best of Don Henley $11.98 Fourteen years separate 2009's The Very Best of Don Henley and Henley's first compilation, Actual Miles: Henley's Greatest Hits. During that near decade-and-a-half, Henley only released one new album, 2000's Inside Job, a record that generated a couple of minor hit singles highlighted by "Taking You Home," which reached number 58 on Billboard's Hot 100 and number 12 on their Adult Top 40 chart. This means that this 2009 compilation doesn't have anything major that's not on the 1995 disc -- even the cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows," which debuted on Actual Miles, has been carried over to The Very Best -- so there's not much reason to swap hits discs, but anybody in the market for a Don Henley compilation will find this satisfying, as it has all the big hits from Building the Perfect Beast and The End of the Innocence. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Dorian Holley - Vocals (Background); Darryl Phinnessee - Vocals (Background); Joseph Powell - Vocals (Background); Carmen Twillie - Vocals (Background); Mervyn Warren - Vocals (Background); Julia Waters - Vocals (Background); Luther Waters - Vocals (Background); Oren Waters - Vocals (Background); Maxine Willard Waters - Vocals (Background); Monalisa Young - Vocals (Background); Terry Young - Vocals (Background) |

A Very Good Year $16.98 Piano trios are not rare, and even exceptional pianists find great challenge in making them exciting. Malinverni, 41 years old at the time of this date, chooses to shade the mainstream jazz he plays in more subtle ways, punctuating the melodies with rich, lustrous elements of sound and swing. Bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Leroy Williams are chosen to support the leader. They are more than merely adequate; in fact, they add their own professional sheen and brilliance to these eight tracks and six standards, two written by Malinverni. Malinverni plays in New York City clubs, but also has regular engagements -- Sunday mornings in church. His original romp "Courtin' the Muse" and the easy bop singer "Projection" reflects the Greenwich Village jazz club/after midnight at Bradley's concept. The former has Williams effortlessly moving from Afro-Cuban excitement to brimming, simmering swing; the latter sports Malinverni's heightened melodic sense á la Bud Powell-Kenny Drew-Chick Corea. Duke Ellington's "Angelica" (a.k.a. "Purple Gazelle") is typically elfin and spritely, bouncing off walls of blue emotion. On the more introspective side there's the obvious spiritual quality of "Steal Away/My Lord, What a Morning." A similar reverentiality buoys the pretty, straight but somber "It Was a Very Good Year," inspired by Frank Sinatra's chronological musings. "Imagination" is the tenderest of ballads in Malinverni's hands. "Blue in Green" takes the Bill Evans/Miles Davis evergreen into a litling, field-of-daisies waltz done in a drastically different key (D-flat instead of B-flat). All in all, this is a beautifully conceived trio date -- one that, in the raft of these kinds of recordings, should not be sussed over. Recommended. ~ Michael G. Very Best of the Byrds [UK] $17.99 Although they are every bit as influential as fellow 1960s innovators the Beatles and the Beach Boys, compilations of classic material by the Byrds have been less frequent. When they have popped up, these albums have tended to focus on specific periods and rarely attempted a definitive retrospective. However, this welcome compilation from the British arm of Columbia Records remedies those problems by collecting a top-shelf array of material from the group's Columbia recordings on a single, comprehensive disc. From early folk-rock hits like "Mr. Tambourine Man" to the Indian-flavored psychedelia of "Eight Miles High" to the mellow country stylings of "Ballad of Easy Rider," all of the group's trendsetting hits are covered. These obvious choices are counterbalanced with the kind of album track favorites that the group's fans adored: notable picks include "Hickory Wind," a wistful slice of country-pop from the pen of Gram Parsons, and "Wasn't Born to Follow," the psychedelic country-rock classic that is best known for its appearance on the soundtrack of Easy Rider. The compilers of The Very Best of the Byrds also added a nice touch by including the original liner notes from the 1967 The Byrds Greatest Hits album. These notes lend an interesting perspective on how seriously the tastemakers of the day took the group, and also include some interesting biographical material about the group's days as Los Angeles club band. A few notable rarities are missing (it would have been nice to include the group's original version of "You Showed Me," which was successfully covered by the Turtles) but this is a minor quibble when the consistently stellar array of material on display is considered. All in all, The Very Best of the Byrds is a great starting place for novice listeners and a solid, convenient disc of high points for the group's fans. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, All Music GuidePerformers: Gene Clark - Guitar, Vocals; Michael Clark - Drums; David Crosby - Guitar, Vocals; Chris Hillman - Bass, Vocals; Roger McGuinn - Guitar, Vocals; Gram Parsons - Guitar, Vocals |

Very Best of Acoustic Alchemy $11.98 Cynics might point out the reality that greatest-hits packages on artists who have left a label are a ploy to milk the consumer, but the consumers care more about a solid package full of their favorite songs from the artist. The new Acoustic Alchemy (with Miles Gilderdale replacing the late founding guitarist, Nick Webb, as Greg Carmichael's partner) is riding high on Higher Octave Music, but the material on this collection -- part of a new GRP collection series -- will always be, to the true Acoustic Alchemy fan, the real deal. AA's post-Webb sound is fancy and feisty, extremely soulful, and very attractive. Yet, there's something more intimate about the way Carmichael and Webb interacted; theirs was a union of true musical soul mates. This wonderful 16-track collection from their GRP and earlier MCA "Master Series" projects was chosen and sequenced by their manager, Stewart Coxhead, and he smartly picks all the crowd favorites: "Mr. Chow," "Catalina Kiss," "Same Road, Same Reason," and more. The range from pop to Latin to reggae is fun to experience again. There's obviously a poignancy to all this because of Webb's 1998 death, but it's more important to celebrate the legacy. As syndicated radio host and Catalina Island Jazz Trax festival promoter Art Good says simply in his liner notes, "These are good songs." More importantly, they speak of an innocent time, the early days of smooth jazz when even the gentlest of these could become radio hits. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music GuidePerformers: Greg Carmichael - Guitar (Nylon String), Guitar (Steel); Gunnar Plumer - Bass (Acoustic); Dan Tomlinson - Cymbals, Drums; Mario Argandona - Percussion, Vocals; Patrick Bettison - Bass; Randy Brecker - Trumpet; Rainer Bruninghaus - Keyboards, Piano; Terry Disley - Keyboards; Klaus Genuit - Percussion; Paul Harriman - Bass; |

Very Much Alive and in Montreux $17.99 This choice chapter in the Memphis Slim story delivers an exciting taste of what a modern electric blues band sounded like in live performance during the early '70s. This reissue includes a bonus track featuring Hammond B-3 organist Deacon Jones and formidable electric guitar wizard Freddie King. (It's quite a package, although even with this extra cut the disc only contains 43 minutes of music.) The year 1973 was particularly exciting as blues, soul, funk, and rock & roll began to blend in ways that had only been hinted at during the 1960s. This cultural explosion was inevitable as music festivals were expanded to include a wide range of styles and genres. The 1973 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, for example, featured One String Sam, Victoria Spivey, Roosevelt Sykes, John Lee Hooker, and Ray Charles on the same weekend as Yusef Lateef, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. The 1973 jazz festival held in Montreux, Switzerland, underwent comparable dilation as Odetta, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, and Professor Longhair appeared alongside Miles Davis, Les McCann, Sam Rivers, and Stéphane Grappelli. Memphis Slim fit perfectly into this mind-blowing lineup. Backed by bassist Benny Turner, drummer Charlie Meyers, and guitarist Joe "Jammer" Wright, Slim rises to the occasion, maintaining at all tempos a powerful presence that is still breathtaking. Most amusing is Slim's politically charged "The Watergate Festival," juxtaposing the seemingly disparate topics of a fertile international music festival scene and the corruption scandal that was steadily disembowelling the Nixon White House during the summer of 1973. This track compares nicely with similar Watergate "tributes" composed and/or recorded by Eddie Shaw, Tom T. Hall, Howlin' Wolf, Big Joe Williams, Percy Heath, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Gil Scott-Heron. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music GuidePerformers: Deacon Jones - Organ (Hammond); Freddy King - Guitar; Memphis Slim - Piano, Vocals; Charlie Meyers - Drums; Benny Turner - Bass |

The Very Best of John Coltrane [Impulse] $14.98 This isn't the first CD that has had the title The Very Best of John Coltrane, and one can safely assume that it won't be the last. The focus of this 74-minute collection is Coltrane's Impulse output -- specifically, modal post-bop that he recorded from 1961-1964. The disc doesn't get into the blistering atonal free jazz he embraced from 1965-1967, which is just as well because even though much of that material is brilliant, it isn't for everyone -- at least not novices and casual listeners who are exploring the saxophonist's work for the first time. And for those who need a dose of introductory Coltrane, this release generally favors the more essential recordings that he provided for Impulse. That includes "Acknowledgement," "Bessie's Blues," and "Crescent," as well as legendary encounters with Duke Ellington ("In a Sentimental Mood") and singer Johnny Hartman ("Lush Life"). Because Impulse didn't have access to Coltrane's famous Atlantic recordings of "My Favorite Things" and "Naima," they chose live versions from various Impulse releases -- both of which are excellent, but not essential. This CD would have been better off with "After the Rain," "Miles' Mode," or "India," none of which are included. Also questionable is Impulse's decision to include a previously unreleased 1962 studio performance of "Impressions," which should have been saved for a collection of rarities -- this is supposed to be a best-of, after all. But all things considered, The Very Best of John Coltrane can serve as a rewarding introduction to the saxman's Impulse period. While this 2001 release is hardly the last word on Coltrane's legacy, it is one of the CDs to start out with for novices. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Eric Dolphy - Clarinet (Bass); Aaron Bell - Bass; John Coltrane - Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Jimmy Garrison - Bass; Johnny Hartman - Vocals; Roy Haynes - Drums; Elvin Jones - Drums; McCoy Tyner - Piano; Reggie Workman - Bass |
